Data Center Field Technician – Fiber Team
Summary
The Data Center Field Technician is responsible for the day-to-day installation, splicing, and testing of fiber optic infrastructure in data centers and telecom environments. This role follows supervisor instructions and project documentation to deliver high quality, standards‑compliant installations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Install and align data cabinets, racks, and Optical Distribution Frames (ODF) according to engineering drawings and project requirements.
- Install and label pathway support systems (basket trays, ladder racks, cable managers, waterfalls) to ensure clean and scalable cable routing.
- Pull, route, dress, and secure pre‑connectorized fiber and patch cords in racks, cabinets, and panels under supervisor direction.
- Perform fiber cable splicing of single mode and multimode fibers, including preparation, stripping, cleaning, and protection of fibers.
- Install and manage fibers in splice trays, enclosures, and patch panels to industry standards.
- Terminate and inspect connectors to ensure low loss, high‑quality terminations.
- Use OTDR, OLTS, light source, power meter, VFL, and inspection scopes to certify fiber links.
- Document basic test results (insertion loss, continuity, etc.) and update splicing and fiber‑assignment records as directed.
- Support troubleshooting activities by collecting test data and assisting with repairs.
- Follow all TIA/EIA, FOA, NEC, OSHA, and company safety and quality requirements on site.
- Travel up to 33%.
- Compliance with all company policies, ISO 9001 standards, affirmative action plan, safety procedures, and drug‑free workplace requirements.
- Regular attendance is an essential function.

The position requires daily contact with all levels of TECO‑Westinghouse and customers including Engineering, Marketing, Factory Operations, Supply Chain, Service and Accounting.
QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Hands‑on experience in fiber optic installation, splicing, and testing on data center or telecom infrastructure.
- Proficiency with fusion splicers and standard fiber prep tools.
- Ability to read and follow network design drawings, splice schematics, and rack elevations.
- Familiarity with OTDRs, OLTS, power meters, VFL, and inspection scopes (advanced interpretation can be learned on the job).
- Solid understanding of OSHA and NEC requirements related to low voltage and fiber work.
- High School diploma required;
Associate’s degree (A.A.) or technical school preferred. - 1–3 years related experience and/or training in industrial drafting, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with design of rotating mechanical components and fabricated structures is ideal.
One or more certifications:
- FOA CFOT / CFOS
- BICSI Technician or higher (e.g., RCDD) or equivalent regional qualification.
- OSHA 30 (OSHA 10 minimum)
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, standards, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Vendor or manufacturer training (e.g., Corning, Fujikura) preferred.
- Experience in hyperscale or enterprise data centers or large‑scale fiber projects preferred.
The ability to read, analyze, and interpret manufacturing drawings, repair specifications, test results, and technical journals; respond to inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community; communicate effectively with top management, customers, trade associations, and other public groups.
