The Surgical Support Technician 1 is responsible for maximizing the efficiency of the operating rooms (OR) before, during, and after surgical procedures by assisting with room set‑up and turnover, supplies and equipment set‑up, inventory maintenance, and non‑clinical support.

Essential Functions of the Role
  • Clean surfaces and equipment in the operating room.
  • Perform proper OR decontamination after each surgical procedure.
  • Collect and discard hospital waste using standard precautions and OSHA guidelines.
  • Perform various transporting duties—including patient, lab, and supply transport.
  • Inventory, monitor par levels, order, and restock supplies.
  • Audit case carts using the doctor preference card (DPC) and replenish supplies as needed.
  • Assist clinicians with tasks inside and outside the OR, including opening sterile supplies under supervision.
  • Prepare for surgical procedures by ensuring instrument sets are complete and performing case cart processes.
  • Perform flash sterilization tests to ensure proper functionality.
  • Assist with medical emergencies following established procedures and guidelines; complete all on‑call duties and act as first‑line resource to the surgical team.
  • Employees hired as Ancillary Support Tech II or III prior to September 1, 2009 may assist physicians and the surgical team; this group is grandfathered and not required to complete an accredited program.
Key Success Factors
  • Previous experience in a healthcare‑related field preferred.
  • Basic office equipment and computer literacy required.
  • Ability to multi‑task and self‑lead problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate precision and flexibility.

Qualifications
  • Education – High‑School Diploma/GED equivalent.
  • Experience – Less than 1 year of experience.
