Microbiology Bioveterinary Scientist
Location:
Leamington Spa
Salary: £30,000 – £35,000
Contract:
Permanent, Full Time
Hours:
37.5 per week, Monday – Saturday, 8‑hour shifts (7 am – 5 pm)
Antech is committed to creating a better world for pets and is looking for a detail‑driven Microbiology Bioveterinary Scientist to provide high‑quality diagnostic laboratory services and contribute to the health and wellbeing of animals.
Key Responsibilities- Perform sample set‑ups, reading, and reporting of assigned cultures and sensitivities using approved protocols.
- Analyse microbiology samples using advanced laboratory instruments (MALDI‑ToF, Sensititre MIC system, anaerobic chamber, MSCs, blood culture systems, etc.).
- Carry out routine instrument setup, calibration, and maintenance.
- Perform PCR testing on clinical samples using automated nucleic acid extractors and real‑time PCR instruments.
- Read, understand, and contribute to SOPs, policies, and QA guidelines.
- Maintain strict compliance with quality control standards.
- Participate in ongoing departmental training.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, enhancing laboratory processes and quality.
- Assist with inventory management for reagents and consumables.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised work environment in line with Health & Safety procedures.
- Support wider laboratory activities across departments as required.
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a science‑related field, preferably Microbiology or Molecular Biology.
- Proven experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory environment.
- Strong attention to detail and consistent application of aseptic technique.
- Familiarity with sample streaking, sub‑culturing, isolate identification, and antimicrobial sensitivity testing.
- Knowledge of companion animal parasite identification.
- Desirable: molecular biology experience.
- Highly organised, able to manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Competent with data entry, Microsoft Office, and laboratory information systems.
- Flexible and adaptable to evolving departmental needs.
