Position:
Ophthalmic Scribe / Technician
Ophthalmic Scribe / Technicians use ophthalmic techniques to perform preliminary work‑up of patients in a clinic setting, assist physicians with examinations and treatment of patients, and provide documentation support.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Function as a scribe requiring knowledge of retina‑specific ophthalmology terminology.
- Proficient keyboarding skills, use of electronic medical record and image management system.
- Utilize electronic mail and instant messaging systems.
- Prepares patients and rooms for treatments and minor procedures as directed by the physician.
- Obtain patient’s past and current medical and ophthalmic history, including medications, allergies and family history.
- Identify potential patient concerns and bring these issues to the attention of the Office Coordinator or physician.
- Measure and record distance and near visual acuity and pinhole acuity; perform preliminary refraction using objective equipment.
- Measure intra‑ocular pressures by applanation tonometry, pneumotonometry or tonopen; check pupillary response and defects.
- Perform basic visual field testing and patient education as directed by Physician.
- Measure and record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respiration) as required.
- Assist with suturing, instilling eye drops, applying dressings, shields and eye patches.
- Perform OCT on patients with speed and accuracy and assist physician with treatments when needed.
- Assist with patient transfers as necessary; travel to other locations as assigned.
- Consents patients for treatment and procedures when appropriate.
- Keep examination rooms clean and stocked with supplies, maintain drug counts.
- Ensure accurate procedure coding and charge entry in the Electronic Medical Records system.
- Assist in other clinical or clerical duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or higher.
- Strong attention to detail and expert keyboard (scribe) skills.
- Ability to understand and correctly spell medical terminology and numbers.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team.
- Basic understanding of ICD‑9/ICD‑10 coding for procedures.
- Capacity to perform physical tasks such as standing, stretching, lifting up to 50 lbs.
Reports to Office Coordinator; all employees report to company Administrator and Physician Partners.
WORKING CONDITIONS- Moderate physical activity (standing, bending, walking, lifting) during the work shift.
- Clean office environment.
- Possible exposure to bodily fluids with direct patient contact.
- Potential hazardous chemicals.
