General DescriptionOphthalmic Scribe / Technicians use ophthalmic techniques to perform preliminary work‑up of patients in a clinic setting, serve as scribes for physicians, and may also directly assist Physician(s) with examinations and treatment of patients.
Responsibilities- Function as a scribe, requiring knowledge and understanding of retina‑specific ophthalmology terminology.
- Maintain proficient keyboarding skills; use the electronic medical record and image management system.
- Utilize electronic mail and other instant messaging systems.
- Skillfully use ophthalmic terminology and type accurately with speed and knowledge of ARC Electronic Medical Records system.
- Prepare patients and rooms for treatments and minor procedures as directed by the physician.
- Obtain patient’s past and current medical and ophthalmic history, including medications, allergies, and family history of eye problems.
- Identify any potential patient concerns and raise these issues with the Office Coordinator or physician.
- Measure and record both distance and near visual acuity with pinhole acuity; perform preliminary refraction using objective equipment.
- Measure intraocular pressures by applanation tonometry, pneumatonometry, and/or use of tonopen; check pupillary response to light and pupillary defects (training provided).
- Perform basic visual field testing and provide patient education as directed by the physician.
- Record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate) as required.
- Complete and maintain scribe certification; upon certification, perform appropriate computerized order entry under the physician’s direction following regulatory and professional guidelines.
- Instill eye drops and assist with application of dressings, shields, and eye patches.
- Understand and input examination and procedure codes (ICD‑9) into the Electronic Medical Records system.
- Ensure accurate procedure coding/charges for all procedures/drugs and correct diagnosis codes are used.
- Keep examination, treatment, laser, and other assigned rooms clean and stocked with supplies; maintain up‑to‑date drug counts.
- Provide consistent, excellent customer service.
- May consent patients for treatment and procedures.
- Perform OCT on patients with speed and accuracy; assist physician with treatments when needed.
- Assist with patient transfers as necessary.
- Travel to other locations as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned, which may include assistance in other departments within Associated Retinal Consultants and at other locations.
- Perform clerical functions such as filing, key boarding, scheduling patients, cleaning, stocking, or other tasks as needed.
- High School Diploma or higher.
- Strong attention to detail and expert keyboard (scribe) skills.
- Ability to understand and correctly spell medical terminology and numbers as percentages; analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with others (teamwork) and provide superior customer service to patients.
Reports to:
Office Coordinator. All employees report to the Company Administrator and Physician Partners.
Vary, but typically Monday through Friday with working hours ranging from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Potential for Saturday work hours depending on location. Work shift hours vary depending on employment status, but generally are 8 hours in length.

Working Conditions- Moderate physical activity (standing, bending, sitting, walking, pulling and lifting) for most of the work shift.
