Position OverviewThe Ophthalmic Scribe/Tech performs preliminary work‑up of patients in a clinic setting, provides support for physicians, and assists with examinations and treatments.
Key Responsibilities- Functions as a scribe with knowledge of retina‑specific ophthalmology terminology.
- Proficient keyboarding, EMR, and image management system usage.
- Utilizes electronic mail and instant messaging systems.
- Prepares patients and rooms for treatments and minor procedures as directed by the physician.
- Obtains patient medical and ophthalmic history including medications, allergies, and family history.
- Identifies potential patient concerns and informs the Office Coordinator or physician.
- Measures and records visual acuity, refraction; performs preliminary refraction using objective equipment.
- Performs basic visual field testing and patient education as directed by the physician.
- Meets vital signs requirements; maintains scribe certification and completes computerized order entry under physician direction.
- Instills eye drops, assists with dressing, shields, and eye patches.
- Provides basic understanding of ICD‑9 coding for EMR input, ensuring accurate procedure coding and charges.
- Maintains clean, stocked examination, treatment, and laser rooms, updating drug counts.
- Provides consistent, excellent customer service and may consent patients for treatment and procedures.
- Performs OCT, assists physician with treatments, and assists with patient transfers.
- Travels to other locations as assigned.
- Completes other duties as assigned, including clerical functions such as filing, scheduling, cleaning, or stocking.
- High School Diploma or higher.
- Strong attention to detail and expert keyboard (scribe) skills.
- Ability to spell medical terminology accurately; analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with others (teamwork) and provide superior customer service to patients.
Work schedule typically Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m., with potential Saturday hours. Shift length is approximately 8 hours. The job involves moderate physical activity (standing, bending, sitting, walking), moderate exposure to body fluids, and possible hazardous chemicals.
Compensation & StatusFLSA Status:
Non‑exempt.
Reports to Office Coordinator; all employees report to the company Administrator and Physician Partners. Directly supervises: N/A.
