The Job in a Nutshell

The Produce Assistant is responsible for assisting the Produce Manager in the successful operation and profitability of the produce department.

Responsibilities
  • Providing world-class customer service as a top priority.
  • Exemplifying integrity, responsibility, and excellence, and adhering to all policies.
  • Creating an inviting, full, and shopable produce department.
  • Assisting the produce department manager with ordering and maintaining accurate inventory levels.
  • Supporting the department manager in managing margins, COGs, and overall department profitability, including minimizing shrink and maximizing effective purchasing.
  • Maintaining the department daily, ensuring produce racks are fresh, full, and abundant.
  • Properly handling, storing, culling, crisping, and rotating produce, ensuring only certified organic produce is ordered and received.
  • Ensuring all in-stock products meet company standards and that tools and equipment are cleaned per health and company standards.
  • Receiving incoming produce orders per standards, offering and following up on special orders.
  • Assisting in training and monitoring department personnel.
  • Conducting demos and addressing performance issues within the department.
  • Handling register functions, including backup cashiering, managing returns, customer complaints, and register shift changes.
  • Maintaining safety and security for customers and employees.
  • Responding to customer questions and increasing product knowledge.
  • Utilizing email and information systems as needed.
  • Completing DSR and cash closing processes if needed.
  • Working a schedule based on store needs, including evenings, weekends, holidays, with a 40-hour workweek and mandatory meetings.
  • This position has limited Manager on Duty functions but is not intended to be the overall Manager on Duty.
  • Qualifications
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
  • 1 year of experience in grocery, retail, or produce environment preferred; experience in natural foods is a plus.
  • 1 year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Ability to pass food safety training and maintain certifications.
  • Ability to manage changing priorities, stay focused, and possess a sense of urgency.
  • Excellent customer service skills, highly organized, detail-oriented.
  • Cashier trained, able to count currency, proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook.

    Physical Capabilities:

    • Ability to lift up to 10 lbs. constantly, 11-20 lbs. frequently, 21-50 lbs. occasionally, and 51-100 lbs. with team lift.
