Specialist Mechanical Engineer/Workshop Manager

Band 6/7, NHS AfC, Permanent, Full time (37.5 hours per week, core 8am‑5pm, occasional out‑of‑core hours).

Salary: £39,959 - £56,515 per annum plus 15% High Cost Area Supplement (subject to £4,870 - £6,137). Salary paid yearly.

The Bioengineering team provides repair, maintenance and manufacturing services to the cancer centre, split into three sections – mechanical workshop, EBME and radiotherapy engineering. The mechanical workshop produces customised equipment for the cancer centre.

• Work closely with radiographers and physics staff to produce patient specific custom shielding and other aids.
• Provide specialist mechanical workshop services, including 3D printing and machining of metals and plastics; design, manufacture and repair patient specific aids.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure equipment is ready for patient use, including manufacture or repair of parts, testing, servicing, calibration and repair.

• BTEC/C&G/Level 3 apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Specialist manufacturer training in maintenance and repair of clinical equipment used with medical gases.

• Mechanical workshop practice (precision fitting, milling, turning, grinding).
• Production or instrument repair workshop experience.

• Highly developed engineering/manufacturing skills with precision limits and tolerances.
• High hand‑eye coordination for manual operation of machine tools and calibration of delicate instruments.
• Technically innovative, able to develop, design and manufacture complex items.
• Motivation and management of staff.

• Specialist mechanical workshop practice and processes.
• Engineering materials selection.
• Electrical and electro‑mechanical fault finding techniques.
• Workshop hazard awareness (fumes, dust, solvents, toxic waste, welding, lifting).
• Gas control and medical vacuum equipment knowledge.
• Sheet lead work.
