Senior Pharmacy Assistant – Harefield Hospital

We are looking for an enthusiastic and hardworking individual to join the Harefield Hospital Pharmacy team. You will provide a professional, efficient and customer‑focused dispensing and supply service.

The successful candidates will have good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work to a high standard within the team or on their own initiative. Main tasks will include:

  • Rotating between dispensary and distribution areas, as required for the need of the service.
  • Accurate dispensing of prescriptions for inpatients and outpatients.
  • Assisting in stock management, including medications used out of hours.
  • Working with the patient services team to ensure that non‑medicinal stock is replenished in a timely manner.
  • Helping to reduce patient wait times and improve the patient’s hospital experience.
  • Responding to telephone and face‑to‑face enquiries from patients, representatives, the public and staff groups, and referring queries to the relevant member of the pharmacy team when necessary.
  • Assisting distribution in daily tasks, including ward top‑ups, picking stock lists, Omnicell top‑up and maintenance, BOC gases and robot maintenance.
Main duties of the job

This rotational post provides support in the pharmacy distribution and dispensary departments at Harefield Hospital.

  • Accurately receiving deliveries into Pharmacy Stores and processing prescription requests from wards and departments.
  • Maintaining and storing medicines in the Pharmacy automated storage system (ROBOT).
  • Processing pharmaceutical orders accurately, ensuring any to‑follows are received promptly or alternatives obtained.
  • Participating in ward and department topping‑up and ensuring appropriate stock rotation, including medicines stored in automated drug cabinets.
  • Informing relevant people of any stock availability issues.
  • Maintaining storage of medicines in automated drug cupboards at Harefield Hospital.
  • Inpatient and outpatient dispensing following departmental procedures.
  • Assisting with filing and archiving prescriptions following agreed standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Regularly checking medical gases stores and maintaining a safe and tidy environment.
  • Integrating infection prevention and control as a core part of service delivery.
  • Interacting with other staff and patients both in person and over the telephone, working quickly and accurately under pressure.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

Communication
:
Work effectively as a member of the Pharmacy team; communicate with senior staff regarding any problems encountered; monitor and report out‑of‑stock issues, liaise with the purchasing team to source alternatives; liaise with the Lead Pharmacy Technician, Patient Services, Principal Pharmacy Technician, Purchasing & Distribution regarding out‑of‑stock lines, non‑contract issues and supplier issues; liaise with all members of staff from Pharmacy, wards/departments, and suppliers regarding orders, deliveries and follows;

communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals, patients and the public; attend to personal callers and telephone requests in a courteous manner and communicate effectively with patients, carers, nurses and doctors.

Patient/customer care (both direct and indirect):

1. DISPENSARY
– Carry out reception duties including answering the telephone and receiving prescriptions from staff and patients in a courteous manner, referring to Pharmacy Technicians or Pharmacists when appropriate.
– Process prescriptions on the Epic integrated system to generate labels in a timely manner.
