Independent Living Centre, Runcorn (main base), satellite clinic in St. Helens, and cover at Europa Point, Warrington.
We are looking for a motivated Wheelchair Technician to join the newly integrated Wheelchair Service for Halton, St. Helens and Warrington.
Main duties of the jobYou will work independently and as part of a team with clients of all ages who have a wide variety of physical disabilities, carrying out routine assessments, implementing treatment plans, and handing over prescribed equipment under the direction of Wheelchair Therapists and the Rehab Engineer Technician.
You will also be required to work in a clinic setting and in external venues including schools, day centres, and patients’ homes.
You will provide technical advice and support to Wheelchair Therapists and Assistant Practitioners and participate in more complex assessments with the Therapists/RET.
You will instruct and advise clients and carers in the correct use of issued equipment, follow treatment plans as prescribed, and report back when further action is required.
You will carry out minor repairs, modifications and adaptations to wheelchairs and special seating, and monitor the quality of the wheelchair fleet.
You will be expected to maintain electronic records, manage your own caseload, and participate in in‑service training and staff induction.

- Carry out minor repairs, modifications, and adaptations to wheelchairs and special seating.
- Give technical advice and support to Wheelchair Therapists and Assistants.
- Monitor quality of wheelchair fleet.
- Provide technical support and advice on engineering issues.
- Assist in information collection from patients/relatives as requested by Wheelchair staff.
- Carry out routine assessment clinics for standard wheelchairs within agreed competency levels.
- Assist at special seating and other clinics as required by Therapists.
- Prepare materials and equipment for clinic assessments.
- Carry out minor modifications/repairs as agreed with the Therapists.
- Check and prepare non‑standard wheelchairs on delivery.
- Check quality of refurbished chairs and report deficiencies to the Team Lead.
- Maintain loan stock and order additional specific spares/accessories as required within MHRA guidance.
- Maintain Health and Safety regulations, report adverse incidents, and participate in safety checks.
- Deliver and fit equipment as required.
- Instruct and advise clients and carers in correct use of issued equipment and follow treatment plans.
- Work independently in a community or clinical setting with an assigned routine caseload.
- Carry out community visits to patients' homes and hand over equipment as per protocol.
- Keep up‑to‑date with current legislation on wheelchairs and CE‑marked parts.
- Keep up‑to‑date with new products available and suggest changes to protocols.
- Liaise with relatives/carers/patients to arrange visits.
- Check electronic control systems on power chairs, set up and program them, and assemble equipment and accessories ensuring compatibility.
- Prioritise tasks allocated and adjust as necessary.
- Report back to wheelchair staff on all activities either verbally or in writing as requested.
- Communicate relevant information to team members and maintain good working relationships.
- Maintain accurate and clear patient treatment records in line with Trust Policies and Royal College of OT standards.
- Maintain timely statistics and other records as requested by the Wheelchair Service.
- Work within the Royal College of OT Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, and Trust Policies and Procedures.
- Respect the individuality, values, and cultural and religious diversity of clients.
- Assist in the day‑to‑day organisation of activities within the team.
- Identify deficits in resources required to carry out the job and bring to the attention of senior Wheelchair staff.
