Job Overview

The Mine Safety Engineer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring safety programs that protect workers, equipment, and the environment across all mining sites in Rustenburg. The role involves conducting risk assessments, ensuring compliance with local and international safety regulations, and collaborating with cross‑functional teams to embed safety into daily operations. The successful candidate will play a pivotal part in reducing incidents, promoting a safety‑first mindset, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive mine safety policies and procedures aligned with South African mining legislation.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, hazard identification, and risk assessments to proactively mitigate potential incidents.
  • Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and HR teams to integrate safety considerations into project planning and execution.
  • Deliver safety training programs, workshops, and toolbox talks for all levels of staff.
  • Monitor and report safety performance metrics, ensuring transparent communication with senior management.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of industry best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes.
Required Skills
  • Strong knowledge of mining safety regulations, including the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA).
  • Proficiency in risk assessment tools and incident investigation methodologies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder engagement.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret safety data and generate actionable insights.
  • Leadership qualities to drive safety culture across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Competence in using safety management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) credentials are advantageous and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in safety management.

Experience
