The Manufacturing Test Engineer/Designer will drive the development of manufacturing test processes for projects in development by R&D. They will be responsible for defining Design For Manufacture and Design For Testability requirements for the development project and support the project’s transition from a development phase through to mass production. The Manufacturing Test Engineer/Designer will provide support to other departments for products in a production or development phase.
They may need to support activities including but not limited to cost reduction, identifying root cause of systemic failures, EOL mitigation, design verification test, and volume test results analysis. They will also perform administrative duties required as part of the team, support definition of department processes and best practices while ensuring they adhere to those practices, identify opportunities for skills development or training, collect and report performance metrics, and identify risks to project plans and schedules.
- Develop test processes for new products from the point of failure analysis through to the point of delivery of completed, verified, and validated manufacturing test processes including all hardware, software and firmware needed to support those processes.
- Participate in design reviews related to both product and manufacturing test processes.
- Provide feedback that will ensure a new product is testable during manufacture.
- Develop product requirements and support the development of product features needed to facilitate the manufacturing tests being developed.
- Support Sustaining Engineering functions such as cost reduction, EOL mitigation and root cause analysis of systemic failures.
- Assist with definition of department development process.
- Assist with the collection and reporting of performance metrics and identify areas of improvement.
- Work with Stakeholders to identify the failure modes which could occur during volume Manufacturing.
- Provide Design For Manufacturability (DFT, DFA etc) feedback to the project development team and champion for their inclusion in the project.
- Define requirements for the production process flow, automated test software and test fixtures needed to manufacture the product and to monitor for the failure modes identified.
- Design production processes appropriately suited to the forecasted production volumes and product cost targets which meet the requirements created.
- Identify areas of risk to a product’s manufacturability, reliability, quality and/or cost and develop strategies to mitigate those risks.
- Define verification procedures for all production processes and fixtures being developed.
- Provide training and support to Operations stakeholders as part of a product’s transition to a production phase.
- Identify improvement opportunities to products and/or processes relating to manufacturability, product longevity, reliability, quality and/or cost. Develop and implement a plan which addresses ROI, development effort and verification.
- Support technical requests which get escalated to the ME group from other departments.
- Audit Test Process controls at Contract Manufacturers.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Typically requires a minimum of 15 years of experience working with low to high volume manufacturing of complex digital/RF products.
- Typically requires a minimum of an Electrical Engineering degree or equivalent.
- Expert with various testing approaches: flying probe, ICT, boundary scan, RF, functional tests…
