The hourly rate for this position is $29.70 plus a 15% 3rd shift differential. General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GD‑OTS), a premier provider of ordnance, weapons and tactical systems to the U.S. Department of Defense and allied nations, is seeking a Multi‑Axis Operator to join our Saco, ME team. Maintain set up and operate multi‑axis (9 or more axis) computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine centers. Perform any combination of machining operations such as milling, turning, facing, boring, threading, drilling, reaming, contouring, 3D surfacing and profiling of metal castings, forgings, bar stock, etc. Requires an understanding and analysis of blueprints and process sheets to completely machine a part requiring the use of various types of machine tools.
Follows established company directives, policies, military specifications, quality documents and manufacturing instructions.
- Searches and loads machine program into the CNC computer. Maintains work shifts, fixture offsets and tool compensations as they relate to the workpiece and program interface. Makes any mathematical calculations necessary to properly locate the various machining areas and hold the machining areas to proper tolerances.
- Reviews process sheet specifications. Ensures that all required tooling and precision measuring equipment is available and on‑hand. Maintains set up of lathe and milling heads. Attaches fixtures to machine beds, tables, and/or spindle nose. Positions workpiece in collets, chucks, or fixtures according to set‑up instructions and secures workpiece in place. Assembles cutting tools in tool holders and positions tools in machine spindles according to established procedures.
- Observes machine operations and verifies accuracy of machined workpiece against process sheet specifications using fixed gages, Micro‑Hite, surface plates, dial gages, micrometers, dial calipers, go and no‑go gages, etc. Must be knowledgeable of keyboard and control panel functions that control the various machining operations.
- Observes metal‑cutting action and monitors cutting tool wear.
- Mounts CMM fixtures, calls up CMM program, performs CMM probe calibration and interprets CMM data.
- Diagnoses dimensional problems and tool wear. Applies knowledge of machinability ratings of materials, workpiece and cutting tool hardness values, cutting tool geometries, material alloys and properties, and cutting tool speeds and feeds calculations.
- Practices safety and good housekeeping policies and procedures. Performs operator tasks according to the machine's process maintenance checklist to ensure that the machine is in proper working order, and records information as instructed. Performs other tasks or duties as assigned by management.
- High school diploma required.
- Associate Degree in Machine Tool Technology or Precision Machining highly preferred.
- Physical capacity to lift 35 pounds on a regular basis.
- No supervision required as to the mechanics of the job.
- Must be able to perform all tasks and duties of: NC Lathe #2 and NC Miller #2.
- Basic computer skills; may be required to enter and verify information into written forms or database(s) as appropriate.
