Under the direction of a Supervising Bridge Engineer, a Senior Bridge Engineer, the Technical Specialist will perform difficult and complex work on specialized transportation‑related structures, engineering projects, or research studies. The incumbent may work in a bridge design branch and receive work assignments, including production work and quality reviews from the Branch Chief. This is a technical position with responsibility for analysis, training and mentoring, project delivery relative to large, complex or high risk bridge design work, and coordination and delivery of large scale projects.
EligibilityEligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Bridge Engineer exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in‑person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs.
Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

- Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) – required.

- Valid California PE (Professional Engineering) license is required for this position.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
- Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) – required. The SOQ must be typed, no more than 2 pages, single‑spaced, using 12‑point Arial font.
Demonstrated ability requirements:
- Promoting team collaboration and ensuring efficient communication at all levels.
- Addressing project delivery challenges including tight timelines, changing scope, insufficient resources, and team member conflicts.
- Recognizing challenges and constraints facing partners and the willingness and ability to find solutions that work within those constraints.
- Provide examples of challenges and constraints in maintaining functionality of toll bridges in the Bay Area, and how a bridge design toll bridge specialist can assist with these challenges.
