Traffic Senior Engineer Position Summary
BENEN seeks a Senior Traffic Engineer who will serve as the future Traffic Practice Lead. This position is responsible for technical excellence, leadership of the traffic discipline, client development, and long-term strategic growth. The ideal candidate brings deep technical experience, strong leadership, and the desire to influence the vision, culture, and market presence of our Traffic Group. This is an ownership track role with direct influence on practice strategy, staffing, client retention, and profitability.
The Traffic Division delivers complete traffic engineering solutions for public infrastructure and private development, including traffic signal design, roadway lighting, intelligent transportation systems, pedestrian and roadway safety improvements, multi modal operations, signing, pavement delineation, and work zone traffic control. The Senior Traffic Engineer leads the preparation of traffic studies, traffic operations analyses, and plan, specification, and estimate packages for traffic signals, lighting, ramp metering, transportation electrical systems, signing, pavement delineation, and construction stage traffic handling.
The role ensures that all deliverables are technically sound, constructible, compliant with agency standards, and delivered within agreed scope, schedule, and budget while supporting proposals and scopes of work that position BENEN to win and successfully deliver traffic projects.
- Establish and uphold discipline wide design standards, processes, and QAQC expectations
- Provide technical guidance, training, and performance coaching to Engineers, Designers, and Technicians
- Lead career development, succession planning, and resource forecasting for the Traffic Group
- Coordinate with other discipline leads to support firm wide operational goals
- Oversee the delivery of traffic engineering projects including scope, schedule, budget, and quality
- Provide responsible charge review of plans, specifications, and calculations
- Mentor Project Engineers and Designers in technical decision making
- Lead multidisciplinary teams through design development and technical reviews
- Ensure workload balance across project teams
- Serve as primary client manager for key agencies and private sector partners
- Ensure project delivery meets or exceeds client expectations
- Foster long term relationships that produce sustained and predictable work pipelines
- Represent BENEN at industry events, client meetings, and professional conferences
- Lead proposal strategy, fee development, and win themes for pursuits
- Identify emerging opportunities, market gaps, and multi year growth strategies
- Support firm wide revenue planning and forecasting
- Position BENEN as a preferred partner for municipal, county, state, and private traffic projects
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering
- Professional Engineer in Civil, Electrical, or Traffic Engineering (CA PE required within 12 months if licensed in another state)
- 10 years of experience in traffic engineering design, operations, and project delivery
- Exceptional understanding of agency standards, traffic signal systems, lighting, ITS, signing, pavement delineation, and staging traffic control
- Demonstrated leadership of staff, clients, and project teams
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Micro Station
- Ability to lead or oversee Synchro, Sim Traffic, Auto Turn, VISUAL, AGI analyses
- Ability to interpret and QC detailed traffic engineering deliverables
Competitive salary aligned with senior leadership responsibility and ownership track expectations. $155,000 - $205,000
