Scope of WorkTo perform rule‑specific inspection activities in the review of plans and inspections of new building projects, alterations, and repairs, to enforce a variety of codes, ordinances, and established standards to achieve compliance, and to perform other duties and responsibilities as required. Depending on qualifications, incumbents may be assigned to any one, or any combination of inspection discipline areas as follows:

- Plumbing/Mechanical Specialty Inspection
- Electrical Specialty Inspection
- Roofing Combination Inspection
- Residential Combination Inspection
- Multi‑Family Residential and Light Commercial Combination Inspection
- Residential Combination & Structural Plan Review
- Non‑Structural Building Plan Review
- Plumbing/Mechanical Plan Review
- Electrical Plan Review
- Project Management
- Enforcement Case Management
- Inspect work product and materials in building construction projects for conformance with plans and specifications, and inspect potentially substandard or dangerous buildings.
- Read and interpret building construction and engineering plan specifications and codes.
- Prepare and maintain reports and permits; enter information into the Automated Permit System.
- Confer with architects, engineers, contractors, builders, homeowners, tenants and the general public, explaining and interpreting requirements and restrictions.
- Issue permits, perform fee calculations, and issue regulatory citations for violations.
- Assist and coordinate with other city departments and agencies on complex projects.
- Provide on‑call, after‑hours, weekend and holiday service when required.
- Maintain professional relationships and provide a high level of customer service.
- Building Inspector I requires skill in one discipline; II requires two disciplines; III requires three disciplines.
- Employees advance automatically to a higher level once experience and certification requirements are met.
- Education and Experience: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade, or one year of municipal or county building inspection experience, or three years of journeyman experience in a related field.
- Alternatively, completion of 21 units of college coursework in building inspection or a related field plus a certification from the ICC or an approved certifying organization, with at least one year of paraprofessional/technical plan‑checking experience.
- Proof of education and certification is required at the time of appointment.
- Valid California Class C Driver License.
- Certification in the assigned discipline(s) within one year of appointment.
- 12 months of probation with satisfactory performance.
- Building Specialty, Plumbing/Mechanical, Electrical: Knowledge of applicable methods, materials, codes, and ordinances; ability to inspect complex work and recognize correct installations.
- Roofing Combination Inspection: Knowledge of roofing methods, incidental disciplines, and related codes; ability to recognize correct roofing installations.
- Residential Combination Inspection: Knowledge of residential construction methods and inspections; ability to recognize correct installations across all disciplines.
- Multi‑Family Residential and Light Commercial Combination Inspection: Knowledge of multi‑family and commercial building methods; ability to recognize correct installations of all disciplines.
- Residential Combination & Structural Plan Review: Knowledge of residential plans, codes, and fee calculations; ability to review plans and issue permits.
- Non‑Structural Building Plan Review: Knowledge of commercial plans and life‑safety codes; ability to calculate fees and review complex plans.
- Plan Review Disciplines: Knowledge of associated plans and codes; ability to review plans, calculate fees, and issue permits.
