ResponsibilitiesThe Division of Engineering Services (DES), Materials Engineering and Testing Services (METS) is looking to hire Transportation Engineers Civil (TE Civil). Under direction of the Senior Bridge Engineer/Senior Transportation Engineer, the TE Civil will perform the duties of a METS Representative (METS Rep.) or Assistant METS Representative (AMR). The incumbent will provide materials engineering expertise on highway construction projects, ensuring compliance with contract documents during all phases.
Work is performed in both an office and field setting with frequent trips to job sites and manufacturer facilities. Travel in and out-of-state up to 25% is required. A valid driver’s license is required for official business travel.
Special Requirements
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Engineer (Civil) exam. Candidates must be on the state examination list or have eligible status (new to state, transfer, reinstatement, etc.).
- Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.
- Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required – limited to one page, single‑spaced, 12‑point font. Resumes do not replace the SOQ.
The SOQ should address the following:
- Knowledge and experience assessing materials, making material‑related engineering decisions, and conducting laboratory test result analysis.
- Experience with design concepts, construction operations, and investigations related to steel elements, cast‑in‑place concrete, precast concrete, pavement surfaces, and prestressing/post‑tensioning systems.
- Experience coordinating with various stakeholders (design, construction, local agencies, etc.) to successfully complete tasks.
- Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Understanding of Quality Management.

Desirable Qualifications- Professional Engineering (PE) license is desired.
