Job Description and Duties

* This is a Peace Officer Position. To be eligible, you must meet the minimum qualifications established by the Department of Human Resources AND either be currently eligible or eligible for reinstatement as a PC 830.2, California State Peace Officer.

STATE PARK PEACE OFFICER (RANGER)(K9) - SAN LUIS OBISPO COAST DISTRICT / PUBLIC SAFETY SECTOR / HEARST SAN SIMEON STATE HISTORICAL MONUMENT

The reporting location for this position is Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument in Cambria, CA. This position will work under the supervision of State Park Peace Officer Supervisor (Ranger).

The incumbent's duties will include public safety, law enforcement, and interpretation, resource protection in a variety of diverse environments, patrolling Hearst Castle, campgrounds, beaches, and visitor center areas. This position will be responsible for special security programs including evening and night security operations, evening tours security, alarm and detection systems, and security gates. The incumbent will be expected to complete the annual POST K-9 team evaluation and meet Department standards as required in the Canine Handler Handbook.

In addition, the incumbent will participate in K-9 and bomb detection training at Hearst Castle and will work closely with other supervisors to support overall District operations. This position will be subject to post and bid within the sector of four K-9 Handlers, and may have the opportunity to bid on a 4/10/40 or 7(k) schedule.

In order to be eligible for this position, candidates must have a minimum of two years' experience as a DPR State Park Peace Officer (Ranger/Lifeguard).

The incumbent will be expected to complete the annual POST canine team evaluation. Interested Canine and non-Canine Handlers should both apply at this time. A supplemental application process will be required for all non-Canine Handler applicants. Candidates that will be eligible for selection to the Canine Program by the final filing date are encouraged to apply. The incumbent will be expected to maintain canine certification and training.

Appointment to the Canine position to be based on an interview, physical fitness and skills assessment, not seniority. Skills testing may involve proficiency evaluation or scenarios involving firearms, defensive tactics and first aid.

This position is designated as not telework eligible.

Working Conditions

Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, loud noises, inclement weather, in old/abandoned structures and around sewage/trash. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Ability to work in a variety of environments including cold, windy, wet, and muddy conditions along lakes, creek banks, wetlands, rocks, brush, etc.

Ability to work in hot, dry, muggy or unpleasant conditions. Typical work activities involve frequent and prolonged periods of standing and walking, as well as prolonged periods of driving.
