Job Description & Duties- Under the direction of a Senior Environmental Planner in the Cultural Studies Office, review cultural resources management reports for statewide consistency with the Section 106 Programmatic Agreement and the Public Resource Code 5024 Memorandum of Understanding.
- Maintain the statewide historic bridges inventory, track National Register‑eligible bridges, and identify the need for future updates.
- Carry out historic studies and planning activities to support the department’s missions and satisfy state and federal historic preservation laws and regulations as applied to transportation projects and programs.
- Work independently or as part of an interdisciplinary team, collaborating with historical archaeologists, Senior Environmental Planners, Environmental Scientists, and other environmental staff.
- Provide direct assistance to other units; review or assist in the creation of environmental compliance documents.
- Provide guidance to regions and districts on technical and compliance issues; develop manuals and guidance; conduct training.
- Serve in a lead capacity over other Caltrans staff or student assistants.
- Be eligible for the position based on the Associate Environmental Planner (Architectural History) exam score.
- For those without current eligibility, be on the state examination list or, if newly hiring, be on the state examination list; a new-to-state civil services employee must meet the minimum qualifications listed in the Classification Specification.
