Job Description and Duties

Under general direction of the Senior Psychiatrist (Supervisor), the Psychiatrist in Mental Health Services is a member of an Interdisciplinary Treatment Team providing general population outpatient services to inmates. The Team includes other psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric social workers assigned to a Service Area. The staff psychiatrist performs psychiatric evaluations, participates in treatment planning and case reviews, prescribes medications, and provides crisis intervention and psychotherapy.

The staff psychiatrist also provides consultations and training in treatment approaches to both clinical and custody staff of the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team.

Compensation and Benefits
  • Recruitment and Retention Bonus may be available for clinicians newly hired with California Correctional Health Care Services.
  • Pay differential:
    Effective July 1, 2023, employees in this class, who are physically located at and assigned to direct in-person patient care on grounds or at a facility, shall receive a pay differential equivalent to 15% of their monthly base pay. Eligible if direct in-person patient care is more than 50% of the pay period.
  • This classification is subject to Section 5, Hiring-Above-Minimum (HAM) Authorization of the California State Civil Service Pay Scales. The authorized HAM rate for this classification is: P $30,259.00, Q $31,136.00.
  • Individuals may be eligible to receive a $10,000 one-time recruitment and retention stipend if they meet eligibility criteria, including remaining employed with CCHCS for six months. Additionally, individuals may be eligible to receive a monthly recruitment and retention differential during their first year with CCHCS (up to $5,000 total) if eligible.
  • California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS) employees may be eligible for a $5,000 referral bonus if selected for hire and remain employed for 90 days. Details provided via internal survey process.
