Overview
Job Summary:
This supervisory position supports departmental goals by processing patient samples and preparing slides for histologic analysis. The incumbent will be competent in the full range of tissue preparation assignments, including specialized techniques such as immunohistochemical stains. They also serve as a lead for technical expertise and in troubleshooting and development of new techniques. The focus of this position is oversight of the Histology laboratory, including the full range of tissue preparation assignments, routine histology, special stains, and the most specialized techniques such as immunohistochemical stains.
Supervisors adhere to all departmental and governing organizations’ policies and guidelines and ensure effective and efficient operations of the section’s pre-analytical and analytical performance.

- Histotechnologist (HTL) or Histotechnician (HT) certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Certification must be up to date and renewed as appropriate.
- Valid California driver's license, driving record in accordance with local policies, and/or enrollment in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
- Bachelor’s of Science in a related science field (Biology, Chemistry, Cell and Molecular, etc.).
- Past work in a hospital/clinical Anatomical Pathology Histology Lab setting within the last five years.
- Experience sectioning paraffin-embedded and fresh tissues as thin as 1 micron on a rotary and/or electric microtome.
- Previous supervisory experience of at least 2 years in a hospital clinical laboratory setting.
- Knowledge and experience embedding fresh and fixed tissues for microtomy.
- Knowledge of routine H&E and special histochemical stains.
- Ability to cut high-quality paraffin-embedded and fresh tissue blocks at 1–10 microns in a timely fashion.
- Ability to learn and perform several special histological stains simultaneously.
- Familiarity with Laboratory and Hospital Information Systems (LIS/HIS) and other basic computer programs.
- Strong communication skills; ability to deliver messages accurately and respectfully; maintain patient confidentiality.
- Additional ASCP certifications related to the Histology Laboratory.
- Five years of supervisory experience in a hospital clinical laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of LIS, EMR, incident reporting systems, email, internet, Microsoft Office, and data management software.
- Knowledge of employee disciplinary steps, collective bargaining agreements, and leaves of absence (FMLA, Kin Care, Workers’ Compensation, etc.).
- Knowledge of Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Continuous Quality Improvement.
- 30% - Personnel Management
- 20% - Immunopathology
- 20% - Tissue Processing/Embedding, Sectioning and Preparation of Surgical/Cytological/Autopsy Paraffin-embedded and Frozen Tissue Blocks
- 10% - Problem Solving & Special Procedures
- 10% - Maintenance of the Laboratory & General Safety
- 10% - Perform H&E and Special Stains on fixed and frozen specimens for histochemical/light microscopy/high-resolution microscopy analysis
In support of UC Davis Health’s mission, the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine provides high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic care to patients. Our CAP-accredited laboratory is located across three facilities: the Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion, the Pathology Building, and the Specialty Testing Center. The department is a large ancillary service with substantial annual revenues and a large staff across multiple units.
