The Radiologic Health Branch (RHB) within the Division of Radiation Safety & Environmental Management enforces laws and regulations to protect the public, workers, and the environment. This branch administers a radiation control program, including licensing of radioactive materials, registration of X-ray-producing machines, certification of medical and industrial users, inspections, incident investigations, and environmental surveillance.
Job Description and DutiesThe Associate Health Physicist (AHP) applies advanced radiation and health physics principles to review and perform complex radioactivity license applications, sealed source and device registries, and other regulatory duties per 10 CFR and 17 CCR. The AHP determines regulatory standards to safeguard workers, the public, and the environment, and participates in or directs on‑site facility inspections. The AHP receives didactic training and attends state and out‑of‑state training as required.
Qualifications- Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) or the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP)
- 4 years of professional operational health physics experience exercising independent judgement in any of the following:
- Establishment and/or evaluation of a radiation protection program
- Design or evaluation of radiation protection aspects of a facility
- Design and implementation of a radiation protection training course or program
- Development of an experimental and/or measurement program
- Evaluation of measurement data
- Analysis and solution of radiation protection problems
- Preparation, interpretation and implementation of recommendations and regulations
- Graduation from a college or university (Bachelor, Master or Doctorate) with a major in Health Physics, Medical Physics, or Nuclear Engineering
If you are new to California State Service, you must take and pass the exam for this classification. Current state employees without transfer or list eligibility must also complete and pass the exam.
Telework InformationAllowable telework: up to three (3) days per week; required in‑person presence: minimum two (2) days per week. Telework is at the Department's discretion and may change. Teleworkers must be California residents; non‑resident candidates may interview but must obtain primary residency in California before appointment.
