The Peer Counselor, CalMHSA Medi‑Cal Peer Support Specialist for our Community Wellness Response Team (CWRT) program provides field‑based direct services and engaging peer support to individuals and families working toward recovery. The Peer Counselor uses personal experience to coach individuals and families through wellness and recovery goals. The role includes assessment, plan execution, peer counseling, crisis support, and referrals to long‑term supports.
Schedule:
Sunday‑Thursday / Tuesday‑Saturday, NOC shift (12am‑8:30am)
- Ensures program offerings are welcoming, engaging, and barrier‑free from a peer perspective.
- Provides mentoring and shared experience counseling to participants and families.
- Completes first outreach to new participants to assess eligibility.
- Participates and leads street and outreach to locate potential participants.
- Conducts ongoing peer support visits on a regular basis.
- Provides individualized peer support, counseling, skill‑building, and intervention.
- Provides crisis support based on emergent needs.
- Provides linkages to other services and self‑help resources.
- Maintains a defined caseload and complex calendar of appointments.
- Documents all services in progress notes and billable services per guidelines.
- Meets defined productivity guidelines.
- Works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team.
- Draws on lived experience to maintain a professional, strength‑based approach.
- Creates safety and promotes health and wellness.
- Welcomes everyone into services using guided experience.
- Behaves professionally and ethically while developing professionally.
- Works independently and as a member of a team.
- Adaptable and open to change and new information.
- Balances interests of a variety of clients and prioritizes.
- Understands community resources and makes referrals.
- Expresses facts and ideas verbally and in writing clearly.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and documentation platforms.
- Able to work in diverse communities.
- Peer certification required (CalMHSA Medi‑Cal Peer Support Specialist or equivalent).
- Peer support experience required.
- High school diploma required.
- Computer and electronic documentation required.
- Bilingual in threshold language preferred.
- Experience navigating the social services system personally highly preferred.
- Experience working in various community settings.
- Highly competitive compensation: $25/hr starting, $26/hr after 90 days.
