This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s mission by performing entry‑level duties in the Radioactive Materials Licensing (RML) Section. The Assistant Health Physicist assists higher‑level health physicists in developing and applying policies, procedures, regulations, and IT integration, and coordinating technical and non‑technical training.
- Applying principles of radiation and health physics, radiation control regulations, and policies to review and perform average difficulty and complexity for radioactive materials license applications including Sealed Source and Device Registries.
- Preparing information on health physics and engineering regulatory standards and policies to ensure the safety of workers, the public, and the environment.
- Assisting senior health physicists with on‑site facility inspections.
- Attending both in‑state and out‑of‑state training as required.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and may be changed. All employees who telework must be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates residing outside California may be interviewed; the selected candidate must have primary residency in California prior to appointment.
Working ConditionsTravel may be required. Reimbursement is based on the employee’s designated headquarters and is subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters will be the responsibility of the selected candidate. The headquarters office location is identified in the attached duty statement.
