Environmental Specialist Level I/II
Sacramento County is hiring for the Environmental Specialist Level I/II position. Environmental Specialists apply scientific theory and methods to identify, research, and resolve environmental issues in regulatory compliance, public health, environmental health, and pollution prevention.
The PositionThis is a continuous filing exam. Next filing cut-offs are at 5:00 pm on: 12/24/2025, 1/07/2026, 1/21/2026 (final).
Level 1 – $6,493.68/month
Level 2 – $6,989.58 - $8,496.42/month
ResponsibilitiesEnvironmental Specialists will research and resolve environmental issues, ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, and policies. Responsibilities include inspection, monitoring, regulation enforcement, data analysis, and report preparation.

- Effects of waste material on water quality, land quality, and interactions with the environment
- Environmental practices with reference to public health and environment quality
- Laws, codes, regulations, and policies affecting the department’s operations and programs
- Applicable tools, equipment and materials
- Principles and procedures of interviewing and fact-finding
- Principles, practices, and techniques of customer service
- Read, interpret, and apply scientific, legal, technical, and complex guidelines
- Speak and write English for clear communication
- Translate scientific terminology for public understanding
- Research, interpret, and apply environmental laws and regulations
- Work independently, prioritize and meet deadlines
- Perform environmental inspections, compliance, monitoring, regulation, and research
- Collaborate with others and maintain constructive relationships
- Collect, process, evaluate, and summarize scientific data to develop solutions
- Prepare and present studies and reports to boards and groups
- Represent the department in public and agency relationships
- Use judgment and initiative for assignments
- Apply interpersonal style for team cohesion
Minimum Qualifications Environmental Specialist (Level I)
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a major in health science, public health, natural science, physical science, environmental science, or a related field; OR
- Written proof of acceptance of education required by the State of California Environmental Health Services (if required for Environmental Health positions);
Certification must be achieved within state law period.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a major in health science, public health, natural science, physical science, environmental science, or a related field; AND one year of professional experience equivalent to Level I; OR
- Valid certification as Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS); OR
- Valid certification as Registered Dairy Inspector; OR
- Master’s Degree in a related field.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stoop, kneel, climb, walk rough terrain, work underground, use protective clothing, calibrate instruments, read gauges, see in dim light.
Work Schedule and ConditionsIncumbents may work in adverse weather, emergencies, and outside normal hours as necessary.
Professional Certification/Registration RequirementsFailure to maintain required certification results in suspension or termination.
Probationary PeriodSix (6) months.
