Telecommunications Systems Technician III

Apply for the Telecommunications Systems Technician III role at the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES).

Responsibilities
  • Respond to and resolve the most critical and complex public‑safety communications problems for State Agency clients.
  • Lead and supervise one or more technicians; may act as area supervisor in their absence.
  • Operate and maintain public‑safety communication networks and equipment, following FCC rules and Cal OES procedures.
  • Plan, organize, oversee, and coordinate work activities of other technicians within an assigned geographic shop or microwave area.
  • Communicate effectively with customers and coworkers, resolving issues and collaborating on solutions.
  • Maintain proficient use of Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, Excel).
  • Travel to remote locations, high elevations, and inclement weather conditions as required.
  • Work a 1 pm–10 pm, Monday–Friday night/swing shift in Sacramento.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Microwave Communications Experience (RF propagation, link budgets, key performance indicators).
  • 24/7 NOC or mission‑critical operations experience.
  • Proficiency with SNMP‑based monitoring platforms and ticketing systems such as Solar Winds and Service Now.
  • Advanced troubleshooting across microwave, IP, and transport layers.
  • Knowledge of TDM, SONET/SDH, Ethernet backhaul, and MPLS for microwave transport.
  • Familiarity with UPS systems, battery plants, generators, HVAC, and remote telemetry.
  • Incident management experience (triage, prioritization, escalation, documentation).
  • Strong documentation skills; accurate logs, tickets, shift notes, outage reports.
  • Effective communication and coordination with field technicians, engineering teams, vendors, and management.
  • Reliability in a 24/7 environment (nights, weekends, holidays).
Highly Desirable
  • Shift Lead or Team Lead experience.
  • Leadership and mentorship abilities for junior and mid‑level technicians.
  • Technical training experience (creating and delivering SOPs, troubleshooting guides).
