Therole
As an Engineering Manager on the MAAS (Metal as a Service) team, you will lead a distributed group of engineers, drive technical excellence, and help shape Canonical’s flagship data‑center product. MAAS delivers a cloud‑style on‑demand API for bare‑metal provisioning, network configuration, and storage. The role requires experience in high‑quality software development, high‑performance team leadership, and deep familiarity with Linux on physical servers, storage, and data‑center networking.
Responsibilities- Lead a distributed engineering team across Americas or EMEA time zones.
- Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and career planning.
- Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
- Advocate for and promote modern software development practices.
- Participate in engineering processes through code and architectural review.
- Engage with broader teams at Canonical, the open‑source community, and partners.
- Travel to internal and external global events for 4‑6 weeks per year.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related field.
- Strong academic record.
- Proven experience delivering software with Python, Go, or similar languages.
- Experience with Linux system administration (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
- Familiarity with modern Linux cloud‑computing technologies, including networking, storage, containers, and Kubernetes.
- Technical aptitude for understanding complex distributed systems.
- Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
- Experience with agile software development methodologies.
- Ability to mentor, develop, and support team members.
- Result‑oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
- Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long.
- Experience with Type Script and modern web frameworks such as React, Angular, Svelte, or Vue.
- Knowledge of data‑center infrastructure management and design.
- Remote‑first work environment with twice‑yearly in‑person team sprints.
