CALTRANS HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER
District 3 – Sacramento, California
Responsibilities- Sweep, shovel, and rake asphalt; pick up roadside litter and dead animals; haul garbage.
- Use tools such as picks, shovels, broom, pitchfork, and hoe.
- Remove brush and undergrowth from highway rights‑of‑way using an axe, pruning shears, handsaw, chain‑saw, weed eaters, shovel, hoe, and bushchipper.
- Seal cracks, resurface, oil, and patch roads.
- Work in extreme conditions: heat up to 120°F, cold to ‑15°F, wind, rain, sleet, and snow.
- Pass the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker examination.
- Possess a valid California Class C driver’s license.
- Pass a drug screening and a Department of Justice background check.
- Minimum qualifications must be verified prior to interview.
- Valid California driver’s license (CDL) with class, expiration, and endorsements listed.
- Drug screening requirement before hiring.
- Class C driver’s license required.
- Submit the Cal Career State Employment Application (STD 678) electronically or mail a completed application package to the Caltrans DHR Mailing Address.
