Volunteer Firefighter
Organization and Area Information: Nestled in the central part of southeastern Arizona’s Gila Valley, the City of Safford is a thriving rural Arizona city. With a population of just over ten thousand, it is the largest municipality in Graham County. Incorporated as a town in 1901 and becoming a city in 1955, Safford has become the major hub for southeastern Arizona.
The City of Safford has multiple departments and over 230 staff members including full‑time employees, seasonal employees, volunteer firefighters and council members. The City also provides utilities for its residents and surrounding areas, including gas, water, electricity, sewer, sanitation, landfill, and airport services.
Position: Volunteer Firefighter
Qualifications & Responsibilities:
- Applicants must live within a three (3) mile radius of the City of Safford Fire Department.
- Firefighter I and II certifications preferred, but not required.
- Ability to perform firefighting duties under a variety of conditions and available for call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Required to pass physical examination, drug/alcohol screening, MVD record check, and fingerprinting.
Additional Information:
- Actual calls pay $30 per call. Meetings, practices, and cancelled calls pay $20 per call.
- Letter from current employer in support of participation in Fire Department.
- Firefighter serves a six (6) month probationary period.
- Firefighter is offered life & health insurance benefits.
- Firefighter participates in Firefighter’s Relief & Pension Fund by contributing 7% of gross salary with City of Safford matching amount.
- Regular meetings of the Fire Department are held the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm.
- Regular practices of the Fire Department are held on the second, third, and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm.
Membership: To maintain membership, members shall respond to at least 33.3% of all meetings, practices, and fire calls during the calendar year, or will otherwise be dismissed from membership of the Fire Department.
Benefits: Any member eligible for benefits who does not respond to 50% or more of all meetings, practices, and fire calls during the calendar year shall forfeit health insurance or other benefits (excluding pension) provided by the City during the next calendar year, unless extenuating and justifiable cause is determined by the Fire Chief.
