Salary & Incentives
  • $45,621 – $54,975 annual base salary
  • Geographical stipend: 5% of base salary
  • Hiring bonus: $5,000
  • Additional incentives: $2,500 upon completion of Correctional Officer Training Academy (COTA)
  • Additional: $2,500 after 6 months of full‑time employment
  • Graduate from COTA: $1,427.92 salary increase
Job Summary

We are actively seeking talented individuals for Correctional Officer positions at our Safford facility. Join us in our mission to enhance public safety across Arizona through modern, effective correctional practices and meaningful engagements. The department’s vision is guided by four overarching, mission‑centered goals:

  • Deliver high‑quality services and continuity of care in facilities and communities
  • Modernize and sustain practices and resources

Applicants who successfully complete our selection process will attend and complete the thirteen‑week Correctional Officer Training Academy (COTA) in Tucson, Arizona. Graduates receive a Certificate of Completion in Correctional Technology, equivalent to 21 college credit hours. Following COTA, you will begin a required 12‑month probationary period, making a meaningful impact on the communities we serve.

Job Duties
  • Ensure the security of the inmate population within the facility’s perimeter.
  • Provide supervision and guidance to inmates.
  • Conduct thorough pat and strip searches to maintain safety.
  • Effectively de‑escalate situations.
  • Initiate and complete reports accurately and promptly.
  • Fulfill all assigned post duties diligently.
  • Respond promptly to emergency situations as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Communication and interpersonal skills
:
Uphold high standards of ethics, integrity, and professionalism. Adhere to the code of conduct, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate impartiality in decision‑making.

Physical fitness and stamina
:
Ability to stand for extended periods, perform searches, restrain individuals, and respond to emergency situations.

Pre‑Employment Requirements
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess a High School Diploma or Graduate Equivalency Degree (GED).
  • Hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Have no felony convictions.
  • Provide proof of legal U.S. residency.

Employment is contingent upon the selected applicant passing a background investigation. Newly hired State employees are required to complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E‑Verify), take a tuberculosis (TB) test during new‑employee orientation and annually thereafter, and meet driver’s‑license requirements if the role involves driving.
