ORGANIZATION AND AREA INFORMATION

Nestled in the central part of Southeast Arizona's Gila Valley, the City of Safford is a thriving rural Arizona City. With a population of just over ten thousand, it is the largest municipality in Graham County. Incorporated as a town in 1901 and becoming a city in 1955, Safford has become the major hub for Southeast Arizona. The City of Safford as an organization has multiple different departments and over 230 staff members including full time employees, seasonal employees, volunteer firefighters and council members to staff all the different positions at the City.

The City also provides all utilities for its residents and other residents in surrounding areas. In addition to the major utilities of gas, water, electric, sewer, and sanitation, the City has a landfill and airport that service the county.

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, operates heavy equipment in the operation and maintenance of the City’s landfill.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is an entry level position within the landfill division of Public Works and is distinguished from the next level position by the absence of the ability to serve as a lead worker in the training and reviewing of work of others. This position reports to the Landfill Supervisor.

  • Operates heavy equipment such as scrapers, crawler tractors with a dozer blade, landfill blade or bucket attachment, compactors, roll‑off refuse trucks, loaders, motor graders and pneumatic tire scrapers.
  • Conducts pre‑operation inspections of equipment, including checking and maintaining all fluid levels and identifying equipment problems and reporting problems for repairs.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment including oil and various filter changes, lubrication, checking wear‑prone parts and components and cleaning of equipment and vehicles.
  • Compiles daily equipment reports, provides and monitors all records of solid waste entering the landfill for industrial and commercial customers.
  • Assists in collecting use fees, preparing invoices for charge customers and estimating the volume of refuse deposited on site for weekly landfill operations reports.
  • Assists with covering the Scale house in emergency situations when Customer Service Representatives are not available, ensuring customer needs are processed timely and efficiently.
  • Participates in training in order to stay current on Scale house operations to be able to cover.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses:

  • High School diploma or equivalent GED certificate, or equivalent experience.
  • Two (2) years work experience in general construction, heavy equipment operation or landfill work or any combination of training and work experience that provides the required knowledge and skills.
  • Valid State of Arizona Driver’s license with the ability to obtain a Class B license with Tanker endorsement within twelve (12) months of hire (Class A preferred but not required). Testing for commercial learner’s permit and/or endorsement tests must be completed with Motor Vehicle Division within six (6) months of hire. (Required to maintain employment).
  • Ability to obtain Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Management Facility Waste Screening certification (Inspector) within six (6) months of being hired into position. (Required to maintain employment).
