Overview

The radiologic technologist plays a critical role in assisting physicians with diagnostic and interventional procedures involving imaging technology, such as fluoroscopy, CT and angiography. This role requires advanced technical proficiency, adherence to safety protocols and collaborative work with interdisciplinary teams in surgical or procedure-based environment. This position sets up all radiographic equipment prior to performing angiographic procedures, processes and performs quality control checks on cine radiographic images, assists in preparing patient for procedures and assists other members of the cath lab/Interventional Radiology staff and physicians as needed to ensure timely and efficient use of the cardiac cath lab/special procedures.

This position includes required participation in on-call coverage rotation based on the operational needs of the department, which will include evenings, weekends and holidays. The guidelines for on-call coverage are outlined and communicated by departmental leadership.

Responsibilities
  • (35%) Assists in prepping patients, sterile tray set up, post-care and procedures, and room clean up. Assists the physician and team with procedures and scrubs in and is present during the entire procedure. Documents procedure details and maintains accurate patient records in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • (35%) Manipulates equipment and sets appropriate techniques on radiographic generators to achieve optimal image quality.
  • (30%) Operates a variety of electronic equipment including cardiac output computers, oxygen saturation equipment, hemodynamic equipment, pacemakers, etc., and performs oxygen saturation studies and cardiac output measurements.
  • Other duties and responsibilities:
    Utilizes various controls to move the radiographic table and C-arm equipment so as to include all areas of anatomical interest on the fluoroscopic monitors and finished images and assists physician on obtaining optimal projections.
  • Monitor patient's condition and vital signs during procedures, alerting the physician of any changes.
  • Collaborates closely with radiologists and surgeons to capture high-quality diagnostic images.
  • Performs quality control checks on equipment and troubleshoot malfunctions as needed.
  • Provides compassionate care, education and reassurance to patients undergoing invasive imaging.
  • Prepares patient and operates imaging equipment during invasive procedures (e.g., angiograms, biopsies, drain placements, cath lab, interventional cases and neurological).
  • Stocks supplies and maintains equipment, assists with cardiac arrest procedures and performs basic office procedures.
  • Utilizes radiographic generators, C-arm and digital systems to provide optimum quality angiographic images in special procedures.
  • Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE), including lead aprons, eye protection, latex material or appropriate substitute.
  • Performs clerical functions as needed.
  • Provides for the age specific needs of the population served according to department standards and policies/procedures for Adolescents 13 to 17 years;
    Adults 18 to 64 years;
    Later Adults 65 years and older.
Certifications and Licensures
  • ARRT - Registered Radiologic Technologist
  • BlS - Basic Life Support
  • RCIS - Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist
  • Required Equivalent

    Experience:

    Within 3 months of hire or transfer;
    Knowledge of radiography as normally acquired through an associate s degree in radiologic technology;
    Knowledge of cardiac catheterization and interventional radiology procedures as normally acquired through 1-2 years of experience. RCIS is preferred but may accept an ARRT certification.

Experience:

Degree in Healthcare Related Field. ARRT registered required. Knowledge of cardiac catheterization and interventional radiology procedures as normally acquired through 1-2 years experience in the cardiac catheterization laboratory and/or the intervention.
