Summary

This position performs Cardiac Ultrasound on all inpatients and outpatients. An Ultrasound Technologist is a Diagnostic Ultrasound Professional that is qualified by professional credentialing, academic, and clinical experience to provide diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The scope of practice of the Ultrasound Technologist includes those procedures, acts and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience, has demonstrated competency, and has completed the appropriate American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) specialty certification(s) which is the standard of practice in ultrasound.

The Cardiac Sonographer is responsible for daily operations of the lab, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality improvement (QI). The sonographer always maintains a high standard of medical ethics and is self‑motivated to pursue lifelong learning to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease and new procedures as they evolve.

Responsibilities
  • (50%) Perform core procedures: transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiography with and without contrast, and conduct diagnostic examinations per protocols for neonatal to geriatric patients.
  • (50%) Analyze sonograms, synthesize patient history, communicate findings to the appropriate physician; prepare equipment; transport patients; explain procedures; record and report studies; accurately pre‑ and post‑process files and reports; utilize cardiovascular systems software.
  • Other duties: record patient data; use IV Optison contrast or agitated saline per protocols; monitor patient condition throughout procedures; participate in lab accreditation; maintain equipment and work area; provide excellent customer service; demonstrate professionalism and courtesy; collaborate with staff to achieve departmental and hospital goals; attend departmental meetings; perform other work duties as assigned; assist in other departmental areas; demonstrate competency in Microsoft Windows;

    engage in further learning opportunities as required by My Michigan Health.
Certifications & Licensures
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – required within 3 months of hire or transfer.
  • ARDMS Ultrasound Technologist certification – preferred within 90 days; otherwise required within 1 year.
  • ULTRA C II and/or CCI certification – preferred within 90 days; required within 1 year if not obtained.
  • RDCS Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer – optional/ non‑essential.
  • Other certifications such as ACLS or CCI are desirable.
Required Education
  • Associate’s degree in sonography or a related healthcare field;
    Bachelor of Science preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of sonography experience; employees hired before 2010 exempt from the associate’s degree requirement.
Physical & Mental Requirements
  • Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Ability to wear PPE including latex.
  • Move freely within facility; sit, stand, walk for long periods; perform stooping, kneeling, crouching as required.
  • Handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, stay alert.
  • Dexterity including reaching, grasping; perform repetitive movements regularly.
  • Physical demand: light; lift 11‑20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, and move arm/leg controls.
  • Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens; must comply with My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing requirements.
