Overview

Under direct supervision of the provider, will be responsible for patient assessment and care, and maintaining appropriate documentation. This position must have basic knowledge of specialty and/or primary care and be able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients. This role coordinates care to ensure high quality, compassionate patient care, maintains and oversees patients at the office locations, and acts as a liaison with other organizations and departments.

May order medical, pharmacy, and office supplies to manage patient care. Ensures compliance with My Michigan Health policies/procedures and OSHA guidelines, CLIA regulations, and all appropriate regulatory agencies. Coordinates with and trains new employees, students and float staff as required. Provides patient education, assists with specialty care modalities, symptom management, is available for emergencies, monitors compliance and effects of care management with high-risk patients, educates on prescriptions and explains medication reasons and side effects to patients and families, and coordinates continuity of care with other providers.

May perform general office duties as needed. Responsibilities may vary slightly by practice; the immediate supervisor can clarify duties.

Responsibilities
  • Triages calls, schedules daily urgent/emergent add-ons, receives and relays test results. Supports, directs and refers patients for consults and/or testing and insurance pre-certification and documentation.
  • Greets patients and/or family, performs routine pre-examination procedures including vital signs, assesses and records data concerning presenting condition, and maintains accurate patient records through orders reconciliation, secure messaging, and other tasks. Performs medication reconciliation, records allergy information, and processes refills within scope of certification.
  • Assists provider with examinations and procedures.
  • Prepares and cleans patient areas, sets up equipment, facilitates room setup after procedures, disposes of contaminated supplies, and sterilizes instruments.
  • Provides complete patient assessment as indicated within the scope of the practice.
  • Performs patient care measures including injections, minor dressing changes, and obtaining blood specimens. May demonstrate competency to assist with procedures such as EKG, PFT, ABI, and NST as required by the practice.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment for patients and co-workers; may travel to satellite clinics if applicable.
  • Understands computer functions in the office setting (MAPS, MCIR Practice Management, Electronic Medical Records, LIS, Emageon, dictation systems, and other programs) to assist providers and staff.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking for patient management.
  • Maintains confidentiality and patient rights in accordance with HIPAA.
  • May perform clerical duties (filing insurance forms, correspondence, arranging hospital admissions, answering phones, updating/filing medical records) and order supplies and medications.
  • Maintains accurate documentation and coding in the medical record per policy; participates in annual quality reviews as needed.
  • Provides for the age-specific needs of the population served according to department standards and policies/procedures, evidenced by observation, documentation and peer feedback.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
