Summary

This position is responsible for accurate registration and insurance verification in all registration areas at My Michigan Medical Center Saginaw and Towne Centre. The role includes making financial arrangements for patients without insurance or with inadequate insurance and performing point‑of‑service collections of co‑pay and deductible amounts at discharge in a diplomatic, customer‑focused manner. Successful candidates will work effectively in a team environment, display strong communication skills, and handle miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Casual staff must pick up a minimum of 50% of available shifts and may be required to provide coverage at Saginaw Main ED and OP Registration as well as Towne Centre ED and OP Registration.

Responsibilities
  • Collect accurate registration information, co‑pay amounts, post payments in the computer, print receipts, and balance cash at the end of each shift.
  • Meet with patients and/or families to explain insurance coverage, treatment costs, hospital billing policies, and outline financial obligations upon discharge. Set up payment plans.
  • Make financial arrangements for patients without insurance or with insufficient coverage and communicate available financial assistance programs for self‑pay patients.
  • Access insurance eligibility websites to verify benefits and coverage, assess co‑pay and deductible amounts, and document the information.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform inpatient admission functions, including direct admits and emergency department admissions.
  • Obtain signatures for admission consent, collect Medicare Important Message forms, review patient emergency contacts, clergy information, and notify the house chaplain.
  • Collect patient demographics to complete registration accurately, including documentation of MSP information for Medicare patients.
  • Use available tools to verify patient identification.
  • Perform pre‑registration for scheduled services.
  • Work all registration‑related Epic work queues.
  • Carry out special projects as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Perform all duties as assigned.
Required Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience, Training, and Skills
  • One year of experience working with insurance and patient accounts.
  • Typing skills and basic personal computer knowledge for entering patient information.
  • Basic math proficiency and customer service skills.
  • Interpersonal skills for communicating successfully with individuals and groups and to convey ideas clearly.
  • Maintain confidentiality with all patient information and data obtained.
  • Preferred knowledge of medical terminology and medical office practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Preferred:
    Four (4) years of experience in a hospital setting with insurance, registration, and collections.
  • Preferred: CHAA certification.
  • Must demonstrate competency in Microsoft Windows.
  • May be required to participate in additional learning opportunities offered by My Michigan Health.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
  • Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex or appropriate substitutes.
  • Must move freely about the facility, with or without an assisted device, and perform all job functions as outlined.
  • Overall vision and hearing necessary, with or without assisted devices.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, or walk for long periods; may need frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other infectious materials; must follow My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing requirements.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular and predictable attendance, and stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling; may require repetition of these movements.
  • Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Occasional lifting or carrying of 0–10 lbs (0–33% of the workday).
