Overview
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant Health Care and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.
The NP will function in a supervised and independent capacity with the Covenant Health Care physician team. Supervision, where necessary, will be provided by the practice’s designated supervising physician.
Responsibilities- Provide care to patients within Inpatient Practices, including Hospital Medicine and the ECC Observation Unit. May also work with Critical Care depending on prior training or existing privilege credentialing.
- Direct Patient Care:
Perform strong patient assessment, take medical history, order and interpret laboratory tests, perform physical exams and treat illnesses and injuries. Complete hospital H&Ps, discharge summaries, and subsequent care. Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Prescribe medication within the scope of license and facility limitations. Educate patients on conditions, treatments, and risk factor modification. Initiate diagnostic evaluations such as imaging, EKGs, laboratory studies, and nuclear imaging.
Refer patients to appropriate specialists, health facilities, agencies and resources and consult with specialists regarding patient management. - Physician Support:
Assist physician with hospital inpatient admission, consultations, and discharges under direct supervision; assist with inpatient rounding; keep in contact with physician regarding patient updates, test results, new admissions, and discharge plan; assist with patient paperwork such as disability forms, prior authorizations, and prescription refills. - Quality Assurance:
Participate in or direct regulatory activities in compliance with CLIA, ACHC, OSHA, EMTALA, and Corporate Compliance/Covenant guidelines. Work with department administration in developing clinical protocols for practice. Complete timely coding and documentation of services provided. - Customer Service:
Maintain a professional, courteous and compassionate approach to patients and staff. Model Covenant’s Mission, Vision and Values and keep our Promise of Caring.
- Current license to practice in the State of Michigan as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
- Graduate from an accredited institution; complete continuing medical education as required by certification body.
- ACLS/PALS certification or willingness to obtain within 6 months of employment.
- Preferred: 2 years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
- Knowledge in the specialties of Critical Care, Hospital Medicine, and Emergency Medicine is preferred.
- Knowledge of Covenant Systems, policies and procedures is preferred.
- Knowledge of care protocols, medication administration, deliverance of care and documentation.
- Knowledge of computer programs and applications; computer literate; must be able to work with an EMR system while providing patient care.
- Knowledge of medical practices, terminology, billing and reimbursement.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
- Interpersonal skills to develop and maintain a variety of internal and external cooperative relationships.
- Analytical skills to plan, develop, and administer care to a wide variety of patients.
- Ability to assess and treat patients with limited history and background in a timely manner.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; respond calmly and effectively in emergencies; make decisions within scope of training and practice.
- Maintain punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
- Constant handling, feeling, talking, hearing and near vision.
- Frequent lifting up to 25 lbs.
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, twisting, reaching, midrange vision, depth perception and field of vision.
- Occasional lifting up to 100 lbs or more.
- Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, tasting/smelling, far vision, visual accommodation and color vision.
