Medical Assistant in Urgent Care, Full‑Time
Location: Northwestern Medical Center, St Albans, VT
Hiring Range: $18.00 USD – $25.59 USD
Job Summary
The Medical Assistant assists the Physician or Provider with daily operations of the clinic. Provides direct patient care, rooming patients, updating the electronic health record, performing necessary ordered procedures and visit preparation. Assists in clinic throughput, order management, and patient follow‑up.
Pre‑requisites
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; MA certification or LNA preferred.
- Experience: Prior patient care experience preferred.
- Other: Excellent computer, interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to problem‑solve and suggest work‑process improvements; high level of accuracy; previous experience with electronic medical records preferred; willingness to cross‑train to the Patient Access Representative role and perform clerical duties as needed; ability to assist in other departments within Physician Services.

- Reports To: Director
- Other Contacts: Director and Manager of Clinical Operations, physician office staff, hospital employees, volunteers, patients, families, and other health‑care providers.
Scope
- Machinery or Equipment Used: Computer, basic office equipment, basic patient monitoring equipment, patient transport devices and aides.
Physical Demands
Use proper body mechanics when assisting a patient; lift up to 30 lbs.; frequent walking and standing.
Working Conditions
Medical office setting with exam rooms, exposure to infectious diseases, and contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances.
Required Protective Equipment
PPE as dictated by patient condition and situation.
Essential Functions

- Sends and receives patient information.
- Communicates with patients, team members, and management in an accurate and timely manner evidenced by:
- Talks with and listens to patients and team members.

- Completes timely clinical documentation/order entry.
- Protects confidentiality of patient and colleague information.

- Incorporates appropriate skills in all interactions and delivery of care, including:
- Performs and documents pre‑visit planning or appropriate pre‑visit interviews/process/evaluations.
- Ensures accurate and timely information is obtained from the patient and delivered to the health‑care provider.
- Performs duties required to ensure compliance with ACO, PCMH or other regulatory or certification requirements.
- Manages equipment use and maintenance.
- Selects point‑of‑care testing.
- Assists patients with ambulation.
- Provides information from provider to patient.
- Demonstrates clinic‑specific skills requisite for the unit/patient population served.
- Sees clinic‑specific competencies.
- Performs administrative and certain clerical duties under the direction of a physician and/or advanced practice provider.
- Collects appropriate and accurate information from the patient, provider and insurance agencies to register a patient for a procedure or test with minimal errors.
- Uses computer systems accurately to complete registration and order review or retrieval.
- Recognizes the information needs specific to insurance providers/billing software, etc., to resolve and prevent issues.
- Requests and explains information in a manner that the patient can understand.
- Efficiently and accurately performs clinical duties to ensure quality service in support of NMC’s mission of providing exceptional care to the community:
- Prepares treatment rooms for patient examinations.
- Ensures patient rooms and instruments are cleaned before every patient visit to maintain infection control standards.
- Obtains patient vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, weight and reports findings to physician or advanced practice provider.
