Support Staff - Maintenance Journeyman - Carpenter

Position Summary

The Journeyman Carpenter performs skilled carpentry work involving the construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of district facilities. This position requires a high level of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team to maintain safe, functional, and attractive district buildings and grounds.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Perform journeyman-level carpentry work, including building and repairing small structures, cabinets, doors (interior and exterior), and other wood-related components in district facilities.
  • Install cabinets, countertops, molding, shelving, and other woodwork elements.
  • Remove and install flooring materials such as laminate, ceramic tile, and carpet.
  • Repair damage to walls, windows, and doors.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints, shop drawings, and sketches; analyze plans for best practices and communicate effectively with others regarding design intent.
  • Apply knowledge of building codes, safety rules, and regulations to all maintenance and construction activities.
  • Safely and effectively operate a variety of tools and equipment related to the carpentry trade.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in safe, clean, and serviceable condition.
  • Assist with, oversee, and approve construction, alterations, framing, forming, and finishing work completed by others within the maintenance department.
  • Perform accurate mathematical and shop calculations relevant to carpentry projects.
  • Order materials and supplies as needed, obtain competitive bids from contractors, and coordinate with vendors on building improvement projects.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with suppliers, contractors, and district staff.
  • Participate in snow removal and salting of district parking lots and assist with grounds duties as needed.
  • Respond to departmental emergencies after regular working hours as required.
  • This position is designated as essential, and the employee must report to work during district closures due to severe weather or as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program or equivalent experience as a journeyman-level carpenter.
  • Strong knowledge of carpentry materials, methods, tools, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, diagrams, and technical documents.
  • Knowledge of applicable building codes and regulations.
  • Skilled in accurate measurement, cutting, assembly, and finishing techniques.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and complete projects efficiently.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
Working Conditions

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Requires physical activity such as lifting, bending, climbing, and operating power tools.
  • May involve exposure to dust, noise, and construction materials.
Schedule And Compensation

  • Full-time, 12-month position.
  • Hours:

    Monday–Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (or as assigned).
  • Salary Grade M50 ($21.53 - $35.95 per hour).
  • Compensation and benefits in accordance with district policies and experience level.
