OverviewThis position is located at UF Health Flagler Hospital. The Respiratory Therapist II provides routine, emergent and critical cardiopulmonary care under the direction of a physician to neonatal (if applicable), pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Adheres to hospital policies, local, state and federal agencies, and standards of accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and maintains respectful relationships. May also function as a lead staff member for monitoring productivity and staff assignment in the absence of a charge therapist.
Responsibilities- Supervises the delivery of cardiopulmonary care in accordance with applicable policy and procedure. Delivers timely therapy according to physician orders. Ensures effectiveness of therapy through assessment and reassessment, monitors patient progress, and recommends changes in respiratory plan of care based on medical necessity. Completes clinical documentation, including skin assessments and worklist tasks, with special attention to detail and reports any unusual findings.
- Monitors, instructs, and coaches patients before, during and after treatment delivery, preventing and/or resolving untoward side effects. Adjusts therapies according to protocol and documented clinical criteria. Makes and/or recommends changes based on pulse oximetry, peak flow measurement, chest x‑ray, lab work and other data relevant to optimal patient progress.
- Initiates and maintains mechanical ventilation, determines or guides ventilator mode and settings, reevaluates patient/ventilator interface at least every four hours, responds to alarms, troubleshoots, establishes weaning readiness, facilitates weaning process, and documents including VAE prevention requirements each shift. Attends interdisciplinary rounding and communicates findings with intensivist team.
- Performs advanced diagnostic and invasive procedures such as insertion and monitoring of arterial lines, assisting with and/or performing intubations, tracheostomy tube change, bedside bronchoscopies and bedside pulmonary function testing; completes clinical documentation with detail.
- Draws and analyzes arterial blood gases; performs point‑of‑care testing including lactic acid, chemistry and troponin. Follows safety and regulatory guidelines in the lab with minimal errors. Reports critical values and recommends changes in respiratory management per blood gas results.
- Responds to all hospital emergencies (Fire Alarm, Code Yellow, Code STEMI, Rapid Response, Code Blue) by establishing and maintaining airway, performing CPR.
- Stays up to date on equipment functions and associated precautions, hazards; initiates preventive maintenance or equipment malfunctions through work orders.
- Demonstrates proper procedures for obtaining, charging for, and returning medications and supplies, ensuring adequate inventory control.
- Participates in daily huddles, rounding, hospital education activities, attends in‑services and training, completes computer‑based learning and Net competencies as scheduled, and utilizes clinical downtime effectively.
- Works independently, may assume charge responsibilities, performs shift count, assigns next shift, forecasts needs, monitors productivity, flexes staffing, assists staff to prioritize patient care, provides resources and guidance to support patient‑centered care, precepts students and new hires, and teaches time‑management skills.
- At least 1 year of Respiratory Therapy experience.
- 1 year Adult Critical Care experience.
- 1 year Level II NICU experience.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist Florida License.
- Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
- BLS must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
- ACLS must be obtained within 60 days of employment.
- PALS must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
- NRP must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
- Associate in Respiratory Therapy.
