Phlebotomist | Outpatient Lab | Full-time | Days at UF Health

Overview

Shift: 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Friday with alternating Saturdays.

The Phlebotomist draws blood following established departmental procedures in a safe manner with minimal trauma to the patient. Verifies patient identification using two identifiers:
Name, DOB or Medical Record Number. Labels all specimens in front of the patient with required information, Allscripts , date and time of collection. Complies with safety standards and uses PPE. Applies knowledge of specimen requirements and resolves unusual test orders by contacting the appropriate healthcare provider and notifying staff or supervisor.

Responsibilities
  • Blood is drawn according to established departmental procedures in a safe manner with minimum trauma to the patient. Monitors for adverse effects of blood draws.
  • Verifies patient identification by using two patient identifiers:
    Name, DOB or Medical Record Number. Never identifies patient by room number. Labels all specimens in front of the patient with required information, Allscripts , date and time of collection.
  • Obtains blood samples from all age ranges including newborn, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Provides instruction and training in theory, technical skills, safety protocols, and laboratory procedures to students and employees.
  • Complies with all safety standards and uses PPE. Follows and reviews general laboratory, safety, and department policies and procedures.
  • Understands and applies knowledge of test specimen requirements and utilizes available reference materials to ensure correct specimen collection. Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the appropriate healthcare provider and notifying staff or supervisor.
  • Helps monitor inventory/supplies and informs Supervisor when ordering is needed.
Qualifications Education / Training
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience Requirements
  • 0‑1 year phlebotomy experience.
Certificates / Licenses / Registration
  • BLS, provided by American Heart Association (AHA), required within 30 days of hire.
Preferences
  • Certificate of Phlebotomy preferred.
