Hardin School Districts 17H & 1 have the following position open for the  school year.

School Counselor – Hardin Middle School

Applicant must have a valid Montana Educator License with a School Counselor endorsement.

Position Overview

The person in this position will counsel individuals and provide group educational guidance. The counselor provides a problem‑solving service to students, their families and staff. Employee may serve as a member of diagnostic teams or educational planning and placement committees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide personal counseling services for students, families, and groups to promote self‑understanding, acceptance, and responsibility.
  • Accept referrals and seek referrals for counseling.
  • Assess and counsel students based on observations, conversations and test results.
  • Prepare materials for classroom or staff meeting presentations.
  • Assist in identifying students with special problems or talents.
  • Consult with and serve as a resource for teachers, staff, and parents regarding developmental needs of students.
  • Refer students to appropriate supportive personnel (speech therapist, school nurse, school psychologist, or other specialists).
  • Provide group guidance activities, classroom guidance lessons, and specialized guidance materials.
  • Maintain knowledge of community support‑service agencies.
  • Act as on‑site contact for child protection and family crisis agencies.
  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and referral agencies.
  • Provide parents with information about school policies and procedures.
  • Conduct and facilitate conferences with teachers, students, and parents; model appropriate conflict resolution behavior.
  • Understand the needs of at‑risk student behaviors and assist with appropriate interventions.
  • Attend 504/IEP meetings and serve as on‑site contact for child protection and family crisis agencies.
  • Process school counseling records for incoming and departing students.
  • Maintain and update student records.
  • Collaborate with teachers and administrators to provide appropriate classroom placement.
  • Prepare reports as needed for building principals and superintendent.
  • Determine needs of the school, staff, and parents and evaluate services offered.
  • Assist administration with standardized testing program and interpret test results.
  • Participate on the school‑based crisis team.
  • Report suspected child abuse cases per state law (mandatory reporter).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in school counseling.
  • Valid Montana Teacher Certification.
  • Counseling and guidance endorsement.

  • Maintain professional code of conduct within legal and ethical standards for school counselors.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and school community.
  • Be flexible in scheduling and planning.
  • Use technology effectively in instructional/learning processes.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Handle stressful situations.
  • Maintain confidentiality of employee and student matters.
  • Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and school board policies.
Compensation

Salary Range SY26-27: $43,063 – $69,444.

Credit for up to eleven (11) years of contracted teaching experience. Bonus of $2,500 added for teachers with an MA degree.
