Job Overview

The purpose of this position is to conduct inmate transports for the St. Charles County Department of Corrections (SCCDOC), to include off-site appointments, court orders, emergency medical issues, and guard inmates who are admitted to the hospital. When SCCDOC does not have any transport needs, the Deputies will assist the Field Services Unit with MDOC prison runs, enforcement and service of court orders/documents, arrest and safe transport of prisoners, provide courtroom security, enforcement of criminal/traffic laws, and other duties as assigned.

This unit will work 12-hour shifts from 0700 – 1900 hours on the 5/2 schedule with every other weekend off. The work is performed under the supervision of the Sergeant-Field Services.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts all transports for the St. Charles County Department of Corrections during the hours of 0700 – 1900 hours to include, but not limited to, necessary medical treatment, off-site appointments, court-ordered appointments, emergency medical issues, and hospital details.
  • Hospital duty of incarcerated subject(s) due to injury/illness.
  • Provide safety/security of incarcerated subject(s) and staff.
  • Properly secure incarcerated subject(s) to hospital beds/gurneys/wheelchairs.
  • Monitoring of incarcerated subject(s) and medical staff entering and leaving the room.
  • Proper transportation of incarcerated subject(s) to and from labs, x-rays, evaluations, and the hospital.
  • Plans and implements transport of new commitments to MDOC, to include WRIT returns/pickups, and parole violators.
  • Assist the Field Services Unit as needed and when SCCDOC does not have and/or require any transport needs.
  • Serves court documents directed to him/her to include but not limited to: lawsuits, summons, subpoenas, ex
    -parte orders, various writs, warrants, mental health commitment paperwork, eviction orders, landlord notices, garnishments, public notices, citations on appropriate parties in accordance with department policy, state, and federal law.
  • Enforce court orders, including but not limited to arrest warrants, commitment orders, mental health warrants, body attachments, executions, seizures, evictions, as directed by the courts in accordance with department policy, state, and federal law.
  • Prepares and files a lawful and timely return of service to the appropriate court of authority on all documents served, as set forth above. Testifies concerning such service as necessary.
  • Plans and implements prisoner transport to/from; county jail, state/federal prisons, courthouse, and internal courthouse transports to/from holding cells and courtrooms.
  • Transport prisoners between the Court and the DOC via vehicle and the Skybridge, and guard the prisoners till completion of their trial/court appearance.
  • Plans and implements prisoner transport from and to other jurisdictions and facilities.
  • Assists with Mobile Field Force events, Civil Unrest, and other security events around the County as assigned.
  • Intervenes in altercations and separates irate individuals.
  • Handles complaints made by the public.
  • Conducts searches of persons, places, and things related to prisoner transport duties.
  • Identifies and takes custody of offenders subject to transport, including subduing resistive arrestees being transported.
  • Completes police reports, daily activity reports, and collects packages of evidence as required.
  • Maintains a level of knowledge and training consistent with SCCSD policy, P.O.S.T., state and federal law, and his/her duties as a Deputy Sheriff in the St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department.
  • Attends and participates in training as assigned. Maintains knowledge of incident documentation requirements; rules of evidence; individual restraint and control methods; local geography; applicable statutes and ordinances.
  • Maintains and services the County vehicle and/or any equipment issued by the County as directed by Department policy.
