    Day Shift for the initial 6‑week training academy, then a shift will be assigned.
  • Days of Work:
    Monday‑Friday for the initial 6‑week training academy, then the work schedule will be assigned based on the needs of the facility where you are assigned.
  • Travel Required:

    Yes, during the initial 6‑week academy. All centralized training will be held at the DOC Central Office starting the week after your date of hire, with the exception of a one‑day training session at MCF‑St. Cloud held at the conclusion of the academy. No hotel accommodations are offered for St. Cloud hires during training.
  • Salary Range: $29.10 per hour; $60,761 per year

Responsibilities
  • Ensure the safety, security, and control of the correctional facility.
  • Supervise incarcerated people to encourage positive behavior and prepare them for successful transition into the community upon release.
  • Communicate written and verbal information clearly, accurately, and timely to support sound decision‑making.
  • Operate all equipment efficiently and safely.
  • Respond to unusual or emergency situations using appropriate Incident Command System (ICS) procedures.
  • Follow all agency and state policies, statutes, and the DOC vision, mission, values, goals, and initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Age: at least 18 years old for an adult correctional facility; at least 21 years old for a juvenile correctional facility (MCF‑Red Wing) unless enrolled in a post‑secondary program in behavioral science.
  • Education:

    high school diploma or GED.
  • Clear criminal history check before hire.
  • Ability to possess and (if required) obtain a permit to possess a firearm.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • At least one of the following:
    • One or more years of full‑time work experience in any field.
    • Two or more years of part‑time (at least 20 hours per week) work experience in any field.
    • Associate degree in Corrections, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Law, Law Enforcement, Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, Sociology, or a related human services field with emphasis in corrections/criminal justice.
    • Bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited institution.
    • Honorable discharge from active military duty in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
    • Current membership in good standing in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
    • Successful completion of an internship in a Minnesota Correctional Facility in a related security area.
Interview Process

Applications are reviewed to determine if minimum qualifications are met. Eligible candidates receive an interview link via Spark Hire One‑way video interview, to be completed within one week. Some facilities offer in‑person interviews. Candidates who do not meet the minimum qualifications will be notified by email. All candidates must meet a passing rate on the interview to be considered for hire.

Physical Requirements

Successful candidates must pass a tuberculosis screening and respirator clearance, review and sign a Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) for the position, and undergo area exposure to a DOC‑approved chemical irritant during training.

Additional Requirements

Background checks may include criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations, and other applicable background information, as well as employment history/reference checks and records of sexual harassment incidents. New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days.
