Job Summary Under the general supervision of a Sergeant, an Officer will protect life, property and transportation infrastructure by enforcing state and federal laws related to commercial vehicle compliance. Responsibilities include screening driver/vehicle credentials, weighing vehicles, inspecting for safety and regulatory compliance, conducting traffic stops, and preparing clear and concise reports. Officers must exercise judgment in use of force and may testify in court when required.
Job Duties
- Screen commercial driver/vehicle credentials and weigh vehicles.
- Perform enhanced vehicle identity inspections, registration compliance checks, and commercial vehicle safety inspections.
- Conduct traffic stops on commercial vehicles and enforce applicable laws.
- Issue permits, route over‑dimensional loads, and collect appropriate fees and taxes.
- Inspect vehicle, dealer, and salvage yard operations for compliance with title and registration requirements.
- Take appropriate enforcement action per state and federal motor vehicle laws.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
- State and federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations.
- Modern law‑enforcement methods, best practices and procedures.
- Search & Seizure, evidence rules, and custody of prisoners.
- Defensive tactics, first aid, CPR.
- Court systems, procedures and protocols.
- Reporting and accounting procedures for the work system.
- Report writing principles.
- Previous certification as a peace officer in Arizona, another state, or a federal agency.
- Compliance with Motor Vehicle Laws.
Skilled In
- Interpret motor vehicle laws and regulations.
- Elicit factual information and draw valid conclusions.
- Build relationships with staff and public.
- Use and care of firearms.
- Operate police equipment in emergencies.
- Exercise discretion in use of force.
- Clear written communication.
- Problem solving and good judgment.
- Completed comparable training to Arizona basic course.
- Google Workspace proficiency.
Ability To
- Prepare clear reports.
- Communicate effectively with staff and public.
- Maintain moral standards and integrity.
- Collaborate as a team.
- Obtain and maintain a CVSA certification.
- Make reasonable decisions under pressure.
- Operate law‑enforcement computers and databases.
- Maintain firearms certification.
- Interpret laws and regulations.
- Secure appointment from an Arizona law‑enforcement agency.
Pre‑Employment Requirements
- Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) Full Authority certification.
- Weapon certification per AZPOST standards; obtain CVSA within 6 months.
- Valid driver’s license.
- For former officers, possible waiver testing and POPAT requirement.
- Required driver training and current, unexpired driver’s license.
- Completion of E‑Verify.
