Job Description
POSITION: Operating Room Surgical Technician (Scrub Tech)
DEPARTMENT: OR –Operating Room Clinical Operations
SUMMARY: The primary responsibility ofthis position is to assist the surgeon performing the procedure in the ORsuite.
I. POSITION DUTIES- Demonstrates and adheres to principles of aseptic techniques.
- Knowledgeable of all basic set-ups for surgical procedures.
- Assists in ensuring patient safety.
- Preoperative duties also include assembling, adjusting, and checking nonsterile equipment to ensure thatit is in proper working order
- Prepares the operating roomby selecting and opening sterile supplies
- Scrubs, gowns, and gloves members of surgical team following aseptic techniques.
- Assists in set up of operating room with all necessary equipment and supplies.
- Assists with the preparation, transportation, andsafety of patients.
- Arranges instruments according to routine for given procedure.
- Handles instruments according to routine for given procedure.
- Maintains sterile field throughout the surgical procedure.
- Performs room clean up following procedures, as well asgeneral housekeeping duties.
- Provides assistance in emergency situations as directed.
- Is knowledgeable and competent to perform those duties associated with central sterile supply including but not limited to initial cleaning, sterilization, autoclave, and wrapping instruments/ sets.
- Provides assistance to team members, physicians, and anesthesia personnel as needed (i.e. reliability, initiative, work relations,training needs).
- Reviews physicians’ preference cards and updates asneeded.
- Assists with stocking, preparation, and waste management of supplies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Develop communication skills and promote departmental relationships to ensure continuity of care.
- Participates in on-going committees and other educational programs to enhance patient care.
- Maintains current CPR certification.

Physicians, Allied Health Professionals, Patients and Families, Representatives of Medical Industry.
It is necessary to perform some overtime beyond regularly scheduled work hours to provide patient care. Additionally, some on-callduty may be required. This is a high paced surgical environment.
V. POSITION REQUIREMENTSPhysical andmental – 80% walking, standing, pushing, pulling, required to move patients. Potential exists for exposure to blood and body fluids as well as other hazardous materials. Personal protective equipment should be utilized as needed. Must have aknowledge of operating room techniques; possess strong organization skills and flexibility; present good communication skills; present a professional image;and be able to handle periods of stress.
VI. POSITION SPECIFICATIONSThe Scrub Technician must be a High School graduate or have completed a GED course. In addition, successful completion of Scrub technician course and 2 years' experience is preferred. The successful candidate must have the ability to work independently as well as function within a team; have a basic knowledge of surgical technique; assist in providing care for the surgical patient; and must possess the ability to handle stress.
