Position: Saint John Registered Nurse Class A (RNCA) PCN 1251151

JOB PURPOSE

To provide a wide range of nursing care to cancer patients and their families, within the scope of educational preparation, in a collaborative environment. As a member of an interdisciplinary team, the RN plans, prioritizes and implements patient care; documents patient care, takes lead in complex nursing situations, IV and chemotherapy administration, administers medication, mentors’ junior staff and LPNAs, exercises judgement and accepting responsibility appropriate to job description and is accountable for own actions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from an approved school for Registered Nurses
  • Current registration with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick (NBNU), and maintains annual registrations by November 15th as per Horizon Health Policy
  • Current in CPR, to be recertified annually
  • Minimum of one year Oncology experience
  • Relevant work experience as a Registered Nurse within the past five years
  • Oncology Certification CNA an asset
  • Highly motivated to pursue standards of excellence in Oncology Nursing (on-going education, CAN certification in Oncology)
  • Certified in venipuncture and initiation of intravenous therapy
  • Must be trained in accessing various access devices (port-a-cath, PAS port, Hickman, PICC Lines)
  • Successful completion of or willingness to complete the Chemotherapy Administration Certification Course
  • Some units will require advance competency training and/or experience
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of the nursing process (Assessment, plan, implementation, evaluation, and documentation)
  • Willingness to participate in continuing education programs as provided
  • Demonstrates initiative, good judgement and the ability to set priorities, including strong critical thinking skills
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, as required with patients, family, and all members of the health care team
  • Adherence to Horizon Policy and Procedures, including but limited to the Horizon Confidentiality Policy to ensure all patients, business, financial, and employee information is accessed on an as needed to know basis
  • Ability to work rotating shifts as assigned, including weekends and holidays
  • Ability to attend work on a regular basis
  • Ability to perform duties to the full scope of the position of RNCA

  • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively within multidisciplinary team and in a collaborative practice structure
  • Demonstrates initiative and the ability to work independently
  • Ability to function within the RNCA scope of practice
  • Maintain a high regard for confidentiality and patient advocacy
  • Maintain and participate in education/ orientation and recertification as required, including but limited to completing advanced competency training
  • Maintains annually, CPR, and other online learning requirements (i.e., WHMIS, Emergency Codes, Hand Washing, MRSA, Standard and Transmission Based Precautions)
  • Possess/Obtain Chemotherapy Certification within 1 year of employment to the Oncology Units and to maintain competencies afterwards, including providing log of treatments where required
  • Possess or Maintain competency in Oncology Nursing Care of patients
  • Escorts patient in ambulance transfer as required
  • Assists in the development of and continuously evaluates effectiveness of nursing care plan
  • Maintains knowledge of treatments, medications, equipment and supplies pertinent to the service
  • Continually monitors, observes, and evaluates patients’ conditions
  • Assists in educating, communicating with patients and families in supportive nature and being a liaison to the physician or interdisciplinary team as required
  • Responds to rapidly changing priorities and emergency situations as they arise, contacting the charge nurse, nurse manager or physician regarding significant changes to patient’s condition
  • Complete BPMH and Discharge Medication Reconciliation as required
  • Participates actively in report
  • Ability to be reassigned within the department/program as operationally required
  • Assumes role of in-charge nurse as required
