The Opportunity

The Safety Specialist reports to the Manager, Safety & Security and plays an essential role in providing safety leadership and technical expertise across the assigned area. This position serves as a subject‑matter expert for safety risk identification and mitigation related to routine pipeline operations, projects, and construction activities. The Safety Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation, and monitoring of employee safety programs, using audit, inspection, and statistical analysis to drive continuous improvement.

This role ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, as well as company health and safety standards, by maintaining thorough documentation, record keeping, and timely reporting. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to influence and motivate staff, management, and contractors, resulting in positive safety outcomes. We are seeking a candidate located in St. Joseph, MO or near one of our office locations within our asset footprint.

What

You’ll Do
  • Provide occupational health & safety leadership, guidance and mentoring for area personnel
  • Assist in the development and implementation of employee health and safety programs
  • Develop health & safety plans, injury prevention programs, specialty training materials and related actions to mitigate risks identified or related to incidents, regulatory events, hazard advisories, best practices and facility projects
  • Promote a psychologically safe environment and foster a proactive, positive safety culture
  • Interpret and provide guidance on occupational health and safety regulations, internal specifications and standards, and best practices
  • Act as a liaison to share best practices and resolve escalated issues
  • Collaborate across internal stakeholders and with industry partners to continually enhance and execute on our safety vision, strategy, and tactics
  • Participate in and support the workplace Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSEC)
  • Conduct training programs and lead exercises to instruct and assess employees in safe work practices and emergency procedures
  • Support projects on new and existing assets to include development of safety plans, hazard identification and mitigation, field support, contractor oversight and support, and project turnover to Operations
  • Promote the use of, and maintain, incident reporting databases, analyzing H & S related data, and provide and present consolidated reports on H & S performance for various stakeholders
  • Identify high energy hazards, correct safety deficiencies upon discovery, and take action to reduce risk
  • Conduct and act as an expert resource for incident / event investigations, developing and implementing innovative and practical solutions, and sharing of learning opportunities
  • Assist with the implementation and tracking of H & S corrective actions to address planned inspection, audit findings, and incident investigation outcomes
  • General oversight and technical support of employee medical surveillance, respirator fit testing, noise surveys, PPE selection/administration, and facility safety equipment maintenance (first aid, showers etc.)
  • Conduct periodic safety inspections to monitor compliance to safety programs, including federal, state, and local regulations
  • Interface with regulators and external visitors during onsite inspections
  • Assist in the implementation of emergency management programs
  • Maintain Incident Command System (ICS) minimum qualifications in order to serve as onsite Safety Officer (SOFR) in the event of a significant incident
