Physician Assistant – Emergency Medicine

Washington University in St. Louis is seeking a Physician Assistant to provide direct patient care in the Barnes‑Jewish Hospital emergency department. The PA may also be credentialed to work at Barnes West County and Missouri Baptist Emergency Departments, with physician support available 24/7 at all sites.

Position Summary

Schedule:

40 hours per week. Variable work schedule includes day, night, and weekend shifts. The PA will work across three clinical sites:
Barnes‑Jewish, Missouri Baptist, and Barnes West County hospitals.

Job Description – Primary

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs physical assessments/examinations.
  • Assesses and counsels patients and obtains medical histories.
  • Monitors patient’s adherence to protocols.
  • Coordinates screening for research studies.
  • Collects and records data per research requirements and guidelines.
  • Develops and implements adherence plans using protocols.
  • Bills for professional services as permitted by the collaborative practice agreement.
  • Interprets diagnostic test results for deviations from normal.
  • Prescribes therapy or medication with physician approval.
  • Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as X‑ray, electrocardiogram, and laboratory tests.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing, wound care, and infection management.
  • Provides physicians with assistance during surgery or complicated medical procedures.
  • Enhances professional growth through participation in educational programs, current literature, service meetings, and workshops.
  • Maintains departmental policies and procedures, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Salary
  • Emergency Medicine stipend available commensurate with years of experience in Emergency Medicine (additional to base salary).
  • Base pay commensurate with experience; salary range reflects base salaries for positions in the relevant job grade.
Working Conditions
  • May require working shifts at all three clinical sites (Barnes‑Jewish, Missouri Baptist, Barnes West County).
  • May require caring for patients of varying acuity, from low to moderate, with potential for complex or higher acuity cases.
  • Normal office and direct patient care environments.
  • Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens; requires protective devices.
Physical Effort
  • Typically sitting at desk or table.
  • Typically standing or walking.
  • Typically bending, crouching, stooping.
  • Occasional lifting (25 lbs or less).
Equipment
  • Office equipment.
  • Clinical/diagnostic equipment.
Education

Relevant graduate degree.

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree – Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Current PA licensure to practice in Missouri and/or Illinois within 3 months of hire, or the ability to obtain licensure.
  • Basic Life Support certification (online BLS without skills assessment is not sufficient).
  • Required certifications:
    Basic Life Support – American Heart Association;
    Basic Life Support – American Red Cross;
    Physician Assistant – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation;
    Physician Assistant – Missouri Division of Professional Registration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minor procedural skills (e.g., suturing, abscess drainage, basic splinting).
  • Emergency Physician Assistant or Certificate of Added Qualification in Emergency Medicine.
  • 3 or more years practicing in an emergency department setting.
