Park Ranger - Full Time & On-Call
St. Louis County
St. Louis County Park Rangers provide services to the community by offering programming, protection, and public relations to visitors of the County park system.
We are accepting applications and will establish an eligible list to fill current and future full-time and on-call vacancies. Applications are valid for six months after submission; if not notified within six months, reapply.
These positions work day and evening shifts, including weekends and holidays. On‑call rangers have a foreseeable schedule; hours vary based on candidate availability and department needs.
Starting salary: $18.77 hourly for both full‑time and on‑call positions. No benefits for on‑call positions.
Examples of Duties- Researches, develops, plans, and presents recreation programs to educate park visitors and the public.
- Develops promotional plans for events and programs, including writing and distributing flyers and brochures.
- Plans, organizes, promotes, and supervises special programs such as Educational Outreach Programs, Firearms Safety, and Classroom & Field Trip presentations.
- Patrols park sites on foot, bike, or vehicle to observe and take corrective action.
- Regulates vehicle traffic flow and provides crowd control to enforce traffic laws.
- Applies for warrants and issues citations to individuals violating ordinances.
- Detains violators within the ranger jurisdiction to control unlawful acts.
- Inspects, cleans, repairs, and maintains equipment, weapons, and gear.
- Prepares written reports of security‑related incidents.
- Assists visitors by answering questions to enhance experience.
- Administers first aid in treatments of minor injuries or emergencies.
- Conducts preliminary investigations and prepares routine reports.
- Functions as Radio Dispatcher when needed.
- Performs related work as required.
Firearms, handcuffs, ASP baton, flashlight, portable two‑way radio, patrol vehicle, pepper spray, first aid kit, utility tools, emergency equipment, binoculars, citation book, bicycle, all‑terrain vehicle.
Working ConditionsSitting and standing for long periods, working in extreme weather, driving long distances, exposure to aggressive persons, animals, pest control situations, and lifting heavy materials.
Minimum Qualifications- Associate’s Degree in Parks Administration, Recreation, Criminal Justice, POST Certification, natural science, or related field AND two years of related experience (preferably including problem resolution in recreation or public safety), or equivalent training/experience.
- Valid driver's license.
- At least 21 years old and qualified for a Park Ranger license issued by the St. Louis County Police Department.
- No felony convictions.
- No assault, stealing, or offenses involving moral turpitude within the past 36 months.
- No domestic violence convictions or active orders of protection.
- No active warrants or probation for any offenses.
Paid medical insurance, 20 days of PTO (first year), 11‑12 paid holidays, retirement plan (4% contribution), life insurance, credit union, 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, pre‑tax premium pay, dependent care, medical expense reimbursement, short and long‑term disability, up to 480 hours of paid parental leave as of Jan 2023.
