Lab Assistant Phlebotomist - Part-time Evenings
Part-time evening position: three 8-hour shifts per week with a weekend and holiday rotation.
Hours:
2:00 PM – 10:30 PM.
Location: MO-SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, 1201 Grand

Job Summary: Duties and standards of this position follow established policies, procedures and guidelines within the department and health system. Duties for this title will be defined and assigned by the department director/manager and may vary with changing needs and priorities.
Responsibilities and Requirements:
- Performs duties in Phlebotomy, Processing, Transporting, Posting and/or Billing, Ancillary testing, Anatomical Pathology, Blood Bank, Special Testing and Microbiology, or other departments within the Pathology laboratory following prescribed procedures.
- Process patients, specimens, orders, reports, and requests; assist pathologists and residents; collect and transport specimens courteously, timely and accurately; refer unusual problems to the supervisor; set priorities with changing workload to ensure timely reporting of test results.
- Essential functions include accurate phlebotomy and specimen handling, correct labeling, timely processing, and maintaining quality and safety standards.
Job Qualifications (Selection Criteria):
- Provide good customer service with accurate, prompt, and courteous responses to inquiries from patients, physicians and hospital staff; answer telephones promptly and professionally.
- Demonstrate caring attitude, courtesy, teamwork, independence when needed, and ability to work under pressure while maintaining safety and quality standards.
- Utilize problem-solving skills in a variety of situations and inform supervisor of decisions and outcomes in a timely, accurate manner.
- Follow hospital policies and procedures; adhere to safety and infection control policies; maintain a clean, safe, and respectful environment.
- Maintain professional growth, competency, and education; establish personal goals aligned with department and hospital needs.
- Comply with regulatory and documentation requirements; accurate data entry and lab information system use; proper specimen accessioning and processing; maintain appropriate stock and supplies.
- Ability to work with diverse populations; effective communication; strong interpersonal skills; time management and ability to meet productivity standards.
Education, Licenses & Experience:
- Education:
High School Diploma or GED required (Medical Assisting or Phlebotomy certificates preferred). - Licensing/Certification:
None required. - Experience:
None required; some preferred. - Skills:
Good oral, written and electronic communication; ability to interpret numbers; ability to work with and interpret lab data; CPR not required.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:
- Manual dexterity; ability to tolerate exposure to hazardous chemicals and blood; color vision sufficient to perform analyses.
- Ability to move between multiple workstations; ability to perform documentation and data entry; ability to lift 30+ pounds and occasionally 100+ pounds; occasional standing, walking, bending and kneeling; exposure to blood, body fluids and biological hazards; exposure to electrical hazards; ability to work under turnaround time pressure.
